About OCCS

Occoquan Swimming (OCCS)

OCCS achieves excellence through individualized growth and team unity by providing quality leadership and instruction. We maintain a safe team environment where every swimmer is encouraged to build friendships, hard work, and have fun in the process of their development. We provide the motivation and discipline necessary to develop skills and self-esteem, resulting in a winning experience.

Occoquan Swimming (OCCS) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 USA Swimming Team in Prince William County Virginia and member of Potomac Valley Swimming (PVS).  USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for competitive swimming in the United States.  It is sub-divided into 59 local swimming committees (LSCs) that maintain jurisdiction over regional swimming competition.  PVS, the smallest in area of the 59 LSCs, includes the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.  Although small in area, PVS, with over 12,000 swimmers, is one of the largest in total number of swimmers in all of USA Swimming.  The approximately 40 member swim clubs in PVS offer competitive swim programs for the youth of the metro Washington area from the novice to the Olympic competition level.  Several World Record holders, past and present, have come out of PVS.

Occoquan Swimming has over 600 great young and upcoming athletes, including National caliber swimmers.  We pride ourselves on producing quality athletes who will go on to be the best swimmers they can be.  We are a local swim team dedicated to creating a safe environment of healthy competitive swimming.

President:

Steve Maynard email

Steve fell in love with the sport of swimming at an early age, swimming, coaching and lifeguarding locally at Evergreen Country Club.  Inspired by his two children Maddy and Ryan, and their love of swimming, Steve entrusted them to OCCS 6 years ago.  His dedication to the team lead him to get involved as an USA Swimming official and as a Board Member. Steve has served as a member-at large and as the financial officer in the past.  He currently provides support as the President of the Board of Directors, an official, and is happy spending his days keeping OCCS an amazing place to learn, train and compete.

Vice President:

Jim Newland email

Secretary:

Tricia Peny email

As a member of Occoquan Swimming since 2010, Tricia has learned the incredible benefits of swimming that go far beyond the pool.  Her three children, Jack, Claire and Tess, have all swam for OCCS, forming great friendships, learning an amazing work ethic and discipline, all the while swimming fast and having fun!  Tricia jumped into officiating during her second year of swim and continues to help the team in many different capacities.  She was first appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014 and currently serves as the Board Secretary where she is able to support the team's core values of Excellence, Teamwork and Character.

Financial Officer

Chris Oliver email

As a Military Family Chris moved with her husband (Tom) and three daughters (Rachel, Sarah, and Olivia) from Belgium to Virginia in 2009. Her family fell in love with the area and has since retired here. In 2011 they began summer swim with the Ashland Stingrays, this started the love for swimming. In 2013 they decided to advance in swimming with OCCS. All three of her daughters has thrived physically and socially with OCCS. She appreciates that OCCS shares the same core values that she and her husband wish to stow upon their children. Wanting to get more involved with the team, Chris decided to Certify as a USA Swim Official along with her husband. Chris proudly serves as the Financial Officer on the OCCS Board of Directors.

Safety Officer:

Todd Mercer email

Todd was indoctrinated into the world of swimming through his children and their summer swim program.  After a few years as a parent volunteer, Todd inherited operations for their summer program. As his children's love for the sport blossomed, a year-round swim program was the natural progression.  With a strong recommendation from their summer coach (a proud OCCS alum) the Mercers joined OCCS in 2015.  Todd was appointed as the Safety Officer to the OCCS Board of Directors in 2017.

At Large Members:

Phil Daniel email

Phil has been around the pool for the past 8 years as all 7 of his children have participated in summer or
year-round swim. His family was excited to join OCCS 3 years ago after searching for a team that would
provide his children with a chance to grow both in and out of the pool. OCCS provided the core values of
Excellence, Teamwork and Character that he, and his wife Stephanie, were looking for.  He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2018.

Brent Gilbert email

Brent's sons joined a local summer swim team at the ages of 5 and 7.  He had no idea what they were getting into but, four years later, it was clear swimming was their sport of choice. The Gilberts joined the Occoquan family in 2013.  OCCS' focus on nurturing young swimmers and developing well-rounded and successful athletes in and out of the pool is why they joined and remian with OCCS. As his sons rose through the ranks, Brent also became more involved as an official and Board member serving his summer team and OCCS.
