1. How often should my swimmer(s) get to practice? Bronze swimmers have four practices available to them and should plan to make 2-3 practices a week. Silver swimmers should try to make at least 4 practices a week. Gold swimmers are encouraged to attend all practices. Improvements in stroke technique and endurance are directly related to the number of practices attended.
2. Will my swimmer(s) still be able to participate in other activities? Yes, many of our swimmers are also involved in scouts, music, art, theater, community activities, and even other sports! We expect our swimmers to be good students and good citizens and strive to develop the whole person.
3. Do we have to be residents of Kettering or join the Kettering Recreation Complex to be on the team? There is no residency or membership requirement. KCST draws swimmers from Kettering and the surrounding communities.
4. What is the difference between short- and long-course seasons? The short course season runs from Sep through Mar and is called short course because competitions are held in 25-yard pools. Long course meets begin in May and are held in 50-meter pools. The long course season wraps up in late Jul/early Aug.
5. How often are swim meets held and is participation mandatory? KCST hosts three home meets and participates in about six others in Dayton and the surrounding area during the short course season (from Sep-Mar). Participation at home meets is expected; participation at away meets is encouraged
6. Do we have to work the KCST-hosted meets if our swimmer(s) will not be participating? Even if swimmers do not participate in our home meets there is still a requirement for family members to support the team by working sessions at the meet. All families benefit from the funds generated by hosting home meets and we simply cannot run meets without the support of our parents.
7. What happens if we’ll be out of town during a meet or are otherwise unable to fulfill our work requirements? If you know in advance you will be unable to meet your work requirements during one of our home meets, you must make arrangements for suitable substitutes. One possible way to meet your requirements would be to offer to swap or cover sessions with another family. Contact the volunteer coordinator to find other families willing to swap sessions. Some session requirements may be fulfilled in advance of the meet (such as helping set up for the meet or arranging food donations). If you fail to sign up for sessions or don’t show up for scheduled sessions, you will be charged $25 per session.
8. What are my volunteer responsibilities as a parent? In addition to supporting the meets, we need parents to become involved in the various committees necessary to run a successful team. We welcome your assistance with hospitality, social events, Splash-a-thon, fundraising, marketing and publicity, etc. There are also opportunities to learn how to run our timing and computer systems and to become certified as an official. Not only does it set a good example, but the bottom line is that your child directly benefits from your involvement with the team.
9. Is participation in the team fundraisers mandatory? KCST has two mandatory fundraisers and participation is mandatory unless you choose to “opt out” at registration. The SCRIP fundraiser requirement can be accomplished simply by buying gift cards or certificates to local and national retailers, restaurants, gas stations, service organizations, etc., for which the team receives a rebate on each purchase. The other fundraiser is our annual Splash-a-thon. Swimmers are required to raise a minimum amount by asking for pledges per lap, for a maximum of 200 laps. The families of swimmers who do not raise pledges individually will be billed on the next monthly invoice.
10. When is dry land training held and what does it accomplish? Dry land conditioning is held the half-hour before water practice on most days. For bronze swimmers, they will have dry land conditioning for 15 minutes before they get into the water. Dry land conditioning stretches and warms the muscles in preparation for water practice.
11. Who attends dry land, stretching and strengthening, and weight training? All swimmers are invited to take advantage of dry land conditioning. Stretching and strengthening is held once a week and is limited to our swimmers age 10 and above. Only individuals evaluated by the coach and deemed physically ready for the demands of weight training will be allowed to participate.
12. What are stroke clinics, and how do we sign our swimmer(s) up? Stroke clinics are specialized training sessions where one particular aspect of swimming is spotlighted and trained. Stroke clinics are held periodically on Saturday mornings for the Silver group and twice a week for the Gold group. Swimmers may sign up for one session every other week to allow everyone the chance to participate. A sign-up sheet is located online under the Events tab.
13. Is there a requirement to wear a particular swimsuit or other team apparel? There is no requirement to purchase and wear a team suit. Our team suit is a black competition suit with KCST embroidered on it. If a swim cap is worn during meets, it must be a KCST cap, which is provided when the swimmer joins the team. Other team apparel is available and wear is encouraged to show team spirit, especially during meets.
14. How will we receive information about upcoming team events? Our primary means of communication is e-mail, so we recommend providing an e-mail address that is monitored frequently. We also use OneCallNow so a telephone number is also required. Other means of communication are our web site and the newsletter.
15. Who do I call with questions if I can’t find the answer on the web site or the handbook? Use the “contact us” feature on the KCST website. There are usually veteran families behind the glass during practice who are happy to answer questions. If desired, KCST will pair you up with a veteran family who can help you with the many questions that may occur to you as the season progresses.
16. Where do I find more information about the sport of swimming? In addition to the wealth of experience our veteran KCST families can share, there are some sites that will be helpful. USA Swimming provides a great deal of information for swimmers and parents and can be found at www.usaswimming.org. Ohio Swimming (www.swimohio.com) is another helpful resource. All of these sites are linked from our team web site, www.kcstcobras.com.
