Howard Hunte, Swim School Director
Coach Howard Hunte was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2000 where he swam under the Hall of Fame Coach Jack Nelson (FLST) and Coach Duffy Dillon (FLA).
He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Fairmont State University in West Virginia in 2006, and went on to earn his Master of Science degree in Athletic Coaching Education from West Virginia University in 2008.
Hunte began his coaching career in 2003 as an assistant coach at Fairmont Area Swim Team (FAST) while he was still an undergraduate, and then served as the head coach of FAST in 2006 and 2007. He also worked as an assistant swim coach for the West Virginia Southern Zone Team in 2005 and 2006. While pursuing his Master’s degree at West Virginia University, Hunte was a Strength and Conditioning intern for WVU athletics and worked specifically with their football, rowing and soccer teams.
In 2008, Hunte was announced as the Head Coach for Valparaiso University’s Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams; a Division I program where he served for 9 years. In Hunte’s nine seasons with the VU swim team, his swimmers broke nearly every program record. On the men’s side, 13 of 14 individual event records and all five relay event records were set since the start of the 2008–2009 season. In addition, in his nine years Hunte coached the VU women’s swimmers to twelve new individual and three new relay records.
