HEAD SWIM COACH:  Steve Lazaraton

Steve comes to Redding via Jacksonville, Florida where he was an assistant coach at The Bolles School for 15 years.  While at Bolles, the teams won 5 National High School Championships, broke 5 National High School records, 30 State High School titles,  and won several USA Swimming Junior National Titles.  In addition, three of the swimmers (Ryan Murphy, Caleb Dressel, and Joseph Schooling) went on to compete in the 2016 Olympics earning 5 Gold Medals, 1 world record and 1 Olympic Record.  He worked with the best coaching staff in the country and is excited to bring his experience, knowledge and passion to Sun Oaks. 

Prior to Bolles, Steve coached in Birmingham, AL in dual roles as an assistant coach with the USA Swimming team, Birmingham Swim League and as a head coach at Mountain Brook High School.  In the 3 years at Mountain Brook, his girls team won 2 State High School Titles and 1 State Runner Up titles. 

Competitively, Steve was a collegiate All-American swimmer prior to transferring to the University of Florida where he met his wife, Lisa Quesada Lazaraton, on the pool deck.  He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Geology and Masters in Education.  As a child, he competed with the Cincinnati Marlins, a team that has also produced numerous Olympians. 

His core values as a coach include:

  • Developing respect between teammates, competitors and those around them
  • And most important, developing excellent character. 

Steve is excited to see the program build as the team has made great strides over the last season. 



Felix Moreno comes to Redding via Barcelona, Spain where he graduated university with a degree in Psychology to Redding to attend Bethel School of Ministry. He is engaged to be married this Fall and he and his fiance have decided to make Redding their home.  We are excited to have him here as part of our team and lucky to have someone with such great international experience as a swimmer and coach. 

Felix brings over 8 years of coaching experience with him working in two different clubs, coaching and teaching swimming to the ages of 3-9 in stroke-school and ages groups (9-16) in the competitive program.  He assisted with updating and developing a stroke school, has worked as an adults swim coach and have been a part of a triathlon program as a swimming and physical coach. Felix was a successful competitive swimmer in Spain and looks forward to giving back to our swimmers what he gained through the sport. 

As a coach, his three main goals are:

1.     To help develop the swimmer as a person (develop character, discipline, companionship, responsibility, etc.)

2.     To create love and respect for the sport

3.     To help develop the swimmer as an athlete (help create and achieve goals)
