Be advised of the following.  Directions to sign up will be sent out closer to sign up date.
 
  • All fees need to be paid in full before you may register for jobs
  • Each family is responsible for working 6 jobs of which 2 of the jobs must be timer positions
  • No family can sign up for more than 1 job at Time Trials
  • No family can sign up for more than 2 jobs per meet for all other meets
  • You must be 14 to work a job
  • Only adults are allowed to work grill jobs.  Closed toe shoes are required.  No sandals.
 
** Be advised if you have a swimmer in either the Classic or City Meet that you will be required to work at that meet as well. That IS NOT part of the 6 jobs required for our regular meets

It is expected that all workers be present from 30 minutes prior to the meet (or shift) start time and stay until the end of the meet (or shift) if credit for working is to be received.

Job

 

Description

Timer

No children

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet. Proceed to the pool where you will see the "Head Timer" for a lane assignment.  The timer uses a stopwatch to record swimmers' times during races.  This position requires you to be on your feet throughout the meet at the poolside where you get an excellent view of the action.   You will be called for the timers meeting sometime from 1/2 hour before to right up to the meet.  In addition to using the stopwatch, you must confirm that you have the correct swimmer in your lane for each heat; one timer on each lane records times.  You will be trained on the stopwatch if you are a newcomer.  You CANNOT supervise small children and time at a meet.  You may be relieved for a short (5 min) break at some point during the meet.

Clerk of Course/

Bullpen

 

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The Clerk of Course uses a bullhorn to announce events to the swimmers.  Bullpen volunteers line up and lead each heat of swimmers to the pool deck, making sure that each swimmer reaches the correct lane.  Your assistance may also be needed to locate swimmers who have not reported for heats, within reason.  Sign up for this job if you enjoy communicating with kids of all ages and don't mind a little exercise during the meet.  As you coordinate the duties with your partner, you should be able to take short breaks to watch your swimmer's events. 

Starter

Training required and counts for 1 of your 6 jobs

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The starter is the official who begins each event.  You need to make sure that the pool is set up and the equipment is functioning.  Attendance at an officials meeting on the pool deck before the meet begins is mandatory.

Referee

Training required and counts for 1 of your 6 jobs

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The referee is the official in charge of the rules and the smooth running of the meet.  You will work closely with the starter to keep the meet moving at a brisk pace.  You will welcome the visiting team and HOLD the officials meeting.

Stroke Judge

Training required and counts for 1 of your 6 jobs

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The stroke judge monitors the stroke of the swimmers for the side of the pool.  You must attend the officials meeting on the pool deck prior to the meet.

Turn Judge

Training required and counts for 1 of your 6 jobs

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The turn judge monitors proper turns and touches by swimmers at the end of the pool opposite from the starting blocks.  You must also attend the officials meeting on the pool deck prior to the meet.

Concessions

Children OK

Report to the concessions area at the time of your shift. Assist concessions chairpersons with the setup of concessions(first shift), serving concessions and assist with the cleanup of the concessions area(last shifts.) Some duties include, filling coolers, setting up food to be purchased, making popcorn,hot chocolate, nachos. serving pizza, snacks and candy and providing meet workers with water various times throughout the meet.

Grill

 No children in grill area

Report to the concessions area for check in at the start of your shift  Then report to grill. Some of the duties include setting up the food and supplies for the grill area(first shift), working the grills and or serving the grilled food, and cleaning up the grill area at the end of the meet(last shift.)

 

 

Scoring

 

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  You will sort swimmers’ time sheets according to meet order or check labels/results after printed out.  You will receive instructions from the Head Scorer at home meets or from the other team's scorer at away meets.  You usually are able to sit during the meet and can get up to watch your swimmer's event.

Runners

 

You must sign in with the Volunteer Coordinator 45 minutes before the beginning of the meet.  The runner will work on the pool deck, collecting timers' sheets and judges' DQ cards to deliver to the scoring table.  You should plan on walking throughout the meet, although you may be relieved for a short (5 min) break.  This is a good spot for watching all the events, although it is not for you if you have smaller children who need supervision during the meet.  You will report to the timers meeting before the meet begins.
