Time Standards for 2017 14 & Under Texas Age Group Swimming (TAGS) Championships

How time standards are calculated - This example uses 2004-2008 numbers, but the concept is still the same for 2012-2016 times. The simplest way I can explain it is this (for short course yards or long course):

  1. For each event/gender/age group, find the 16th fastest time in the nation from the last 5 years. This is the "seed time"
  2. For each event/gender/age group, there is an "adjustment factor" - typically it's 5%, but varies a little (see the chart)
  3. To find the motivational time, use the following formulas:
    1. AAAA = seed + seed * adjustment
    2. AAA = seed + seed * 2 * adjustment
    3. AA = seed + seed * 3 * adjustment
    4. A = seed + seed * 4 * adjustment
    5. BB = seed + seed * 6 * adjustment
    6. B = seed + seed * 8 * adjustment

To get short course meters, there's an additional factor that is multiplied with the adjustment factor (also listed on the table, but it's usually 1.05 except for distance swims). Not really that important since there aren't very many SCM pools.  (Except, or course, the one at Laughlin...)
