Practice Group Information

Swimmers are placed into practice groups at the beginning of the season based on their age as of May 1, 2018.

6 and Unders

Our youngest swimmers usually start off working on basic swimming skills and as a result are generally only swimming one or two events at meets. Most swimmers master freestyle and backstroke during the season. It is unusual for young swimmers to swim breaststroke and butterfly legally but they will prepare for these strokes during practice. At meets, swimmers can enter up to three individual events and one relay event. However, swimmers are only placed in events when their strokes are legal.

7-8

Most 7 & 8 year old swimmers have mastered freestyle and backstroke, and many of them can swim the breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley events. This group focuses on stroke work by using drills to develop good strokes and habits. At meets, swimmers can enter up to three individual events and up to two relay events. However, swimmers are only placed in events when their strokes are legal.

9-10

Most 9 & 10 year old swimmers have been introduced to all of the four competitive stokes and the individual medley event. Swimmers in this age group work on drills to improve their strokes. By mid-season, most of the 9 & 10 year olds can legally swim the individual events and the IM. Swimmers in this age group can swim up to three individual events plus up to two relay events at meets.

11 and Olders

Most older swimmers have had summer swim team experience. Swimmers in this group are usually proficient at all four competitive strokes and the individual medley. Swimmers in this group can participate in up to five individual events plus two relay events at meets. With the exception of the 11-12 butterfly event, swimmers in this group will swim 50-yard individual events at meets. (11 & 12s swim 25-yard butterfly at meets.) Swimmers in this group work on stroke mechanics, flip turns, dives, and racing. As the season progresses, swimmers will swim longer distances at practice to build endurance.
