To join the GPS swim team, your swimmer will need to be able to swim two of the four strokes (typically freestyle and backstroke) unassisted for at least two lengths of the pool (50 yards). The swimmer's skill level and ability will be assessed by the coaching staff during try-outs which take place according to the try-out schedule listed below. Please contact us if you are planning to try out for the team prior to showing up. If the swimmer is not successful during the try-out we will help connect them with a different swim lesson program within the YMCA to help them better their skills and abilities and prepare them to be on the swim team in the future.
Once accepted onto the swim team, each new swimmer will attend stroke school unless they already possess the skills and abilities to begin more advanced swimming. During Stroke School swimmers will hone their skills on each of the four strokes (one stroke each week). This will give them the tools to be successful when having to swim more yards in the pool over a longer time. They will also learn how to do racing starts, turns and finishes.
Every Swimmer is required to be a member of the Grants Pass YMCA and USA Swimming. The front desk at the YMCA will handle all registration paperwork and initial fees for joining the team. Please see the FEES section for more on the cost of joining the swim team and registration forms.
Please contact Head Coach Mike Shaw and make an appointment to come try out for the swim team. He can be emailed at [email protected] or by phone at 541-218-7558.
