In keeping with our philosophy of providing a well-rounded, quality, competitive swimming program for youngsters of all ages and abilities, the Berkeley Barracudas offers levels of professional technique instruction and training.
All swimmers within this group must be able to successfully swim each of the four competitive strokes in a legal manner as deemed by USA Swimming, Inc. rules. Further, sharpening of the competitive strokes through drills and kicking will be emphasized. Starts, turns, and mental skills for training for the next level will also be emphasized. Athletes are expected to attend 3 workouts per week.
The silver group is very dedicated to improving stroke technique, starts, and turns. This group is the level in which swimmers will be introduced to training concepts in swimming. Drill work and kicking will continue to make up a large portion of this group; however, swimming sets will be added. At this level, goal setting will be introduced and swimmers will be expected to be more accountable for their progress in swimming. Consistent practice attendance is necessary for continued improvement and advancement to the next group. Athletes are expected to attend 3-4 workouts per week.
The gold group will continue to advance their stroke technique. They will learn more advanced drills. The group will also be challenged physically through interval and dryland training. They will continue to learn goal setting and be challenged to commit to the goals they set. Through this process the athlete starts to take ownership of their swimming. This group is designed to prepare athletes who wish to advance into the senior level. Interval training is an important aspect of this group and minimum standards may be expected. This is the first level where a commitment to the sport is important for continued success. Athletes are expected to attend 5-6 workouts per week.
This group constitutes the highest level within the Berkeley Barracuda team structure. Swimmers with the necessary talent and desire are provided with a training program designed for success in regional, national, and international level competition. Athletes in this group have chosen swimming as their primary extra-curricular activity. This group requires a positive mental approach to the sport. Athletes in this group are expected to be positive influences on the group and on the rest of the team. This group has standards in attendance, practice performance, and meet performance. Athletes must maintain over 90% attendance of 7-9 workouts per week.
