Training Groups

The Thunderbirds offer training groups for swimmers, ages 6 & over with varying abilities. It is the goal of the Thunderbirds to offer age specific training for all our athletes. Training is geared towards challenging and developing each swimmer into a strong and confident athlete. Each swimmer will learn racing termanology to use when racing in USA swim meets. 

* Monday through Friday Swim Practices will be held at the Marlene Meyerson JCC of Manhattan located at 334 Amsterdam Avenue and West 76th Street. The swimming pool is located on the 6th Floor.

** Sunday Swim Practices will be held at the Sacred Heart Swimming Pool located at 406 East 91st street between York Avenue and 1st Avenue. 

 

Junior

Developmental group for swimmers 8 and under who are proficient in 25 meters of ALL four competitive swimming strokes. Swimmers must be able to complete a minimum of 50 meters of freestyle and backstroke comfortably to be considered for the team. Junior swimmers will refine their competitive stroke basics in all four strokes and begin to learn the language of swim training.

 


              Workout Days/Times: 

Mondays & Thursdays: 3:30-4:15PM

Sundays: 3-4PM

 

Novice

Swimmers must be competent in all four competitive swimming strokes at a distance of 50 meters for freestyle and backstroke and 25 meters for butterfly and breaststroke. Knowledge of legal touches and turns and ability to dive are strongly recommended. This training group will focus on building a strong technical foundation with an added emphasis on the mental strength it takes to train and compete in the sport of swimming.


              Workout Days/Times: 

Mondays & Thursdays: 4:15-5:00PM 

Sundays: 3-4:30PM

Bronze

Swimmers should be able to complete 50 meters of each of the four competitive swimming strokes. Legal touches and knowledge of all turns are recommended. These young athletes will be introduced to the intricacies of competitive swimming and will build their technical and physical abilities.


             Workout Days/Times: 

Tuesdays: 5-6:30PM 

Thursdays: 5-6:00PM

Sundays: 3-4:30PM

Silver 1

Swimmers must be able to complete 50 meters of each of the four competitive strokes and 100 meters of freestyle. All flip turns, open turns and legal touches will be worked on and perfected. These athletes will focus on technique and endurance training.


             Workout Days/Times: 

Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 5-6:30PM

Sundays: 4:30-6:00PM

Dryland required: Tuesday & Wednesdays: 4:15-4:45PM

 

 

Silver 2

Swimmers must be able to complete 50 meters of butterfly and breaststroke and 100 meters of freestyle and backstroke. All flip turns, open turns and legal touches are required. These athletes will continue to focus on perfecting swim technique and speed training.

             Workout Days/Times: 

Mondays & Wednesdays: 5-6:30PM

Thursdays: 5-6:00PM

Sundays: 3-5:00PM

Dryland required: Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays: 4:15-4:45PM

Gold

Swimmers must be able to complete 100 meters of each of the four competitive strokes. All starts and turns are required. Swimmers in this training group will experience intense work on advanced level techniques and endurance.

Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 5-6:30PM

Thursdays: 5-6:00PM

Sundays: 4-6PM

Dryland required: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays: 4:15-4:45PM

Elite

Minimum age for entry into this group is 13. Swimmers entering the Elite group must display a strong desire to perform at the highest level of swimming. Training is geared towards individual talents and a strong aerobic endurance factor. Swimmers in the Elite group are directed towards setting individual goals for their swimming careers including college level swimming. Swimmers will be selected from the top swimmers in the 13 and Over age group based on tryout times, work ethic and goals.
