THE TALENT CODE: Greatness isn't born. It's Grown. Here's How. - Daniel Coyle

This is a great book for swim parents, for it provides remarkable insights to how great athletes are developed. Coyle largely rejects the conventional notion of talent based on nature/nurture, and offers a more scientifically-sound account of what talent is and how it is developed. Although certain physical characteristics are an advantage in many sports, exceptional skill is developed through deep deliberate practice. Technique perfection early on is paramount. To master technique, each skill involved has to be broken down into pieces, which have to be practiced slowly until perfection. Speed should not be introduced until a high degree of mastery has been reached. Our teaching philosophy at STREAMLINE is based on these principles.
