Swim Groups

The Yosemite Marlins Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Yosemite Marlins Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Novice Group

This is our entry level group geared towards children from approximately 5 - 10 years old.  This group is focused on having kids enjoy swimming while learning fundamental skills which will lead to their progression into the developmental group. 

Entrance Requirements: the athlete must be able to swim 25 yards unassisted with side breathing.

There is no attendance requirement for this group, however swimmers are strongly encouraged to make it to practice consistently 2-3 days per week.

Practice session duration typically runs from 45 min to 1 hour.  Two 15 - 20 minute dryland exercise sessions may also be included in this practice group.

Swim practice for this group typically occurs on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.

Required Equipment: Team competition suit and cap, practice suit (one piece for girls, jammer or brief for boys), mesh bag, snorkel, water bottle, goggles, and fins (only if the team provided ones don't fit). 

Developmental Group

From the Novice group, athletes move into this group. Athletes in this group are typically 7 - 14 years old. Practices are focused mainly on learning four legal competitive strokes for success at entry level meets, having fun, and perfecting start and turn technique.  Swimmers are also introduced to basic level interval training.  

Entrance Requirements - Athletes must comfortably perform the following criteria:

6 X 100 free @ 2:15

4 X 100 backstroke @ 2:30 

- Attend 2-3 practices per week

- Attend  >80% of assigned meets

- Acquire Coach Approval

Swimming practice session duration is usually 1 hour per day.  Two 15 - 20 minute dryland exercise sessions are also included in this practice group.

Swim practice for this group typically occurs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30 - 6:30 pm during the school year.

Required Equipment: Team competition suit and cap, practice suit (one piece for girls, jammer or brief for boys), mesh bag, snorkel, water bottle, goggles, and fins (only if the team provided ones don't fit). 

Intermediate Group

Swimmers progress into this group from the developmental group.  Athletes in this group are usually at least 9 years old, have 4 legal competitive strokes, and display a desire to train on a more committed basis. Practices become more focused on preparing swimmers for competitions.  Interval training becomes a regular component to practices.  Consistent attendance at practices is required for all swimmers in this group.

Entrance Requirements - Athletes must comfortably perform the following criteria:

10 X 100 Free @ 1:50

6 X 100 IM @ 2:00

-Attend 3 - 5 practices per week

-Attend >85% of assigned meets

-Acquire Coach Approval

Swim practice session duration is usually 1.5 to 1.75 hours per day.  Three 30 minute dryland exercise sessions are also included in this practice group. 

Swim practice typically occurs Monday through Friday from 4:45 - 6:45 pm.  Dryland practice occurs typically on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:15 - 4:45 pm.  

Required Equipment: Team competition suit and cap, practice suit (one piece for girls, jammer or brief for boys), mesh bag, snorkel, water bottle, goggles, paddles, and fins.

Advanced Group

Swimmers progress into this group from the intermediate group.  Athletes in this group are usually at least 11 years old and display a commitment desire to train for competitions.  Emphasis in practices is placed on interval training, detailed stroke technique, and race strategies that prepare swimmers for higher level competitions.  Consistent attendance at evening practices is required for all swimmers in this group and morning practices for high school age swimmers begins.

Entrance Requirements - Athletes must comfortably perform the following criteria:

12 X 100 Free @ 1:30

8 X 100 IM @ 1:45

-Attend 4 - 5 evening practices per week

-Attend >90% of assigned meets

-Acquire Coach Approval

Evening swim practice session duration is usually 2 hours per day.  Three 30 minute dryland exercise sessions are also included in this practice group.  Morning swim practice sessions are typically 1 hour in duration.

Evening swim practice typically occurs Monday through Friday from 4:30 - 6:30 pm during the school year. Dryland practice typically occurs on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00 - 4:30 pm.  Morning swim practice typically occurs on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45 - 6:45 am.
