The Mini Makos Program is designed for swimmers who want to be part of the Oakwood Youth Swim Team, but might not be quite ready. If your child, ages 4 to 7, cannot swim 25 yards each of backstroke and free style with side breathing, non-stop, then Mini Makos is the place for your child to develop those skills and advance to the Swim Team!
Oakwood’s Mini Mako program serves as an introduction to competitive swimming. This program prepares young swimmers to complete the minimum swim skill requirements for participation on Oakwood’s summer swim team.
Requirements for joining the Mini Makos:
- For children ages 4 to 7 years old.
- All participants must be water safe.
(Water safe is defined as being able to swim a modified freestyle in the big pool. This includes the swimmer being able to lift their head to breathe while swimming. They must be able to lift their head to breathe while swimming at least twice and continue on swimming without the assistance of the wall or lane line.)
- Swim fins and goggles are required (available for purchase at Activities)
Requirements for Graduation to Swim Team:
1. Swim freestyle, with side breathing, the length of the lap pool.
2. Perform an assisted backstroke with use of a kickboard, one length of the lap pool.
Once a participant can perform the minimum required skills outlined for swim team they have successfully completed the Mini Mako program and are now eligible to graduate to swim team at the completion of the mini makos session.
NOTE: The Mini Mako program is designed as a one-time program to advance a swimmer to swim team. Any parent wishing their child to return to the Mini Mako program in 2020 must be approved in advance by the Head Swim Team Coach.
