Waves Volunteers.....We Need YOUR Help

 

All swim team parents automatically qualify for membership in our corps of volunteers! Each family with Waves swimmers is required to sign up to volunteer for five (5) jobs. Each family with ONLY Ripples swimmers must sign up for two (2) jobs. Families with both Waves and Ripples need to choose five (5) jobs. There are jobs that count as a single volunteer commitment and others that are Season Long positions and count for all five (5) of your spots. There are also some jobs that count as two (2) volunteer jobs. Please see the volunteer descriptions below for details.

Swim Meet Volunteers:

Timers: Timers check-in with the Head Timer 30 minutes before the swim meet starts. Timers are given stopwatches and three timers are assigned to each lane in a race and stand at the finish end of the pool. Timers start their watches when the Starter sounds the buzzer to start the race. When the swimmer touches the wall at the finish, the Timer stops the watch and the time is recorded on the swimmer's card. Nine to twelve Timers are needed per meet. Training is provided at the meets.

Head Timer: The Head-Timer checks in with the Team Representative 45 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Head Timer maintains the stop watches, ensures they are in working order, coordinates the Timers, distributes stopwatches, assigns timers to lanes and starts two watches at the start of each race. A Head Timer should be very comfortable with the timing process. Training is provided at the meets. This job requires Board approval.

Runner:  Runners check-in with either the Head Clerk or Computer Team at least 30 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Runner collects the time cards from the Timers after each race and delivers them to the Computer Team. Another runner will collect cards for 25 yard events from the Clerk of Course and hand them out to timers for those races. Training is provided at the meet.

Head Clerk of Course: The Head Clerk of Course checks-in with the Team Representative at least 30 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Head Clerk coordinates the Clerks of Course and keeps the swimmers aware of their races. A loud voice is very important. Training is provided at the meets. This position requires Board approval.

Clerks of Course: The Clerks of Course check-in with the Head Clerk of Course at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the meet. The Clerks of Course gather swimmers before their race, ensure each has their card, and makes certain they are in the proper order in the chairs before each race. Clerks need to be loud and energetic. Three Clerks are needed at Wednesday evening meets and one Clerk is needed for Saturday morning meets. Training is provided at the meets.

Snack Bar Volunteers: Check-in with the Head Snack Bar Coordinator at the start of your shift. At all home meets, we have volunteers cooking, serving food, and taking payment.

Sat. Morning Snack Bar Volunteers - Need to arrive by 6:45 a.m. to get started.

Wed. Evening Snack Bar Volunteers - First shift arrive by 4:30 p.m. Second shift arrive by 6:15.

Stroke & Turn Judges: The Stroke & Turn Judges check-in with the Starter/Referee at least 30 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Stroke & Turn Judges are specially trained and certified by the league to recognize all legal swim strokes and acceptable turns. During a meet, they observe the race and note any stroke or turn faults made by the swimmers. League training is required. Training is an evening class held by the Colonial Swim League and then "shadowing" another Stroke & Turn Judge for four (4) meets during the season.

Referee: The Referee checks-in with the Team Representative at least 45 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Referee is specially trained and certified by the league to be the official in charge of the meet and enforce all league rules and guidelines. Training is an evening class held by the Colonial Swim League before the first meet. One Referee is needed for every home meet.

Starter: The Starter checks-in with the Team Representative at least 45 minutes before the swim meet starts. The Starter is specially trained and certified by the league to announce each race and provide an official legal start to each race. Training is an evening class held by the Colonial Swim League before the first meet. One Starter is needed for every home meet.

Computer Team Volunteer: The computer team volunteers should have received training in the Hy-Tek and Team Unify software before signing up for these positions. If you are interested in becoming a Computer Team Member, you should contact courtneyfreck@yahoo.com. The computer team works at all swim meets entering the swimmer times and disqualification information into the computer. They may also be called upon to help with meet entries if needed. Two computer volunteers are needed for each swim meet. 

Season-Long Volunteers:

Computer Team Lead: Our Computer Team enters all swimmers' times into our team computer and generates race results and numerous statistics. The Computer Team Lead directs the rest of the computer team and works with the Coach to construct ladders and meet entries and determine year-end awards. This position required Board approval.

Trophy Coordinator: The Trophy Coordinator orders, picks-up and delivers to the Team Picnic trophies for all team members.

Team Event Volunteers:

Pancake Breakfast Coordinator - purchases the food, arranges for necessary supplies and equipment and directs volunteers for the event.

Pancake Breakfast Volunteers - are needed to set-up, prepare pancakes, monitor eating tables, clean-up between shifts, and help kids with cutting, syrup, and spills.

Ice Cream Social Coordinator - purchases the ice cream, arranges for necessary supplies, and directs the volunteers.

Ice Cream Social Volunteers - are needed to set up, scoop ice cream and clean up.

Team Picnic Coordinator: The Team Picnic Coordinator plans and manages the end-of-the-season team picnic, including games and food and assigns the event volunteers to specific jobs. (Will be equivalent to 2 volunteer jobs).

Team Picnic Volunteer positions include Games and Activities Director/Announcer, Games/Activities Helpers, Set-Up, Clean-Up, Grillers, and General Helpers.

Ripples Swim Meet Volunteers - Waves swimmers have traditionally served as the volunteers for this meet, but volunteers still might be needed for Clerks, Runners and Snack Bar Workers for this fun season-culminating event.
