BELLINGHAM BAY SWIM TEAM MEMBERS EXCEL AT

U.S.A JUNIOR NATIONALS AND WESTERN ZONE

CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

          Bellingham Bay Swim Team (BBST) swimmer John McCallen qualified for final competition in 4 events at the USA Swimming Junior National Long Course Championships held August 9-13 in Irvine, CA.  The competition featured 900 of the fastest swimmers 18 years old or younger in the U.S.A. .  McCallen, 18, swam to lifetime bests and team records in the finals of the 50 Freestyle (24.18, 10th), 100 Freestyle (52.54, 10th), and 100 Butterfly (57.17, 18th).  McCallen also placed 16th in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.20).  He is now qualified for USA Swimming Senior Nationals, the top level of USA Swimming, in 4 events in short course (25 yard) and 4 events in long course (50 meter).

          BBST swimmers Kelly Runestrand, Colin Flynn, and Evan Gregory represented the Pacific Northwest Swimming All-Star Team at the Western Zone Championships held August 9-13 in Salt Lake City, Utah .  The competition features All-Star swimmers from each region of USA Swimming in the western United States .  Runestrand, 16, reached final competition in 3 of her 5 individual events: 50 Freestyle (28.54, 5th, BBST record), 100 Breaststroke (1:19.19, 7th), and 200 Breaststroke (2:53.85, 8th).  She was also members of the teams 400 Medley Relay that placed 7th.  Colin Flynn, 14, competed in 5 individual events and the 200 Medley Relay (4th) and the 200 Freestyle Relay (3rd).  Gregory, 18, competed in 5 individual events and 4 relays.
