Head Coach - Shane Esau

Shane is a trained NCCP Level 3 coach and has a masters degree in the Art and Science of Coaching with a specialization in exercise physiology. Shane has been around the pool for almost 50 years, first as a swimmer, who had achieved National team member status, and was a finalist in numerous National Championships.  After his swimming career ended, he then started his coaching career and worked his way up to becoming the head coach of a small club in Calgary. He went on to coach in Nanaimo, BC, as well as working with the National Paralympic Swim Team as an exercise physiologist. Shane took on the role of lead exercise physiologist for a number of Paralympic teams. Shane believes that technique is the corner stone in competitive swimming mixed in with very specific workouts to develop the physiology of a competitive swimmer.

Assistant Coach - Abigail DiCastri

This is Abby’s second season with the Airdrie Phoenix and she is super excited to return to the club!  Abby started swimming at the age of nine for the Cochrane Comets Swim Club and then swam for several years with the University of Calgary Swim Club to further her development as an athlete. She swam at the age group National level for a number of years before switching to coaching. Abby coached for several seasons with the University of Calgary Swim Club, working primarily in their age group program. Abby is very excited to be apart of the Phoenix program and is hoping to foster the same love and passion for the sport that she had. Abby’s favourite part of coaching is watching the development of skills and confidence, through fun and effective training. Abby is a trained NCCP Level 1 coach, with high hopes of continuing her coaching education.
