March 12, 2020

Dear Swimmers, Coaches, Officials, Parents and Clubs,

EVENT POSTPONEMENT – Swim Alberta Provincials and Swim Alberta Spring Championships:  Swim Alberta Statement
Please circulate to your entire membership.

Decision

It is with heavy hearts and with compassion on the effects of our Athletes, that Swim Alberta has made the very difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Short Course Provincials, this coming weekend.  The event was slated to take place on Friday, March 13 – Sunday March 15th at Repsol Sport Centre in Calgary.
Swim Alberta will also be postponing the 2020 Spring Championships that was to take place March 19th – March 22nd at the Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton.

Assessment

As Swim Alberta watches the cancellation of many sporting and cultural events across our nation and world-wide, we recognize that a decision needs to be made around the health and safety of our membership and the greater community.  Alberta Health Services (AHS) has asked that organizations assess the level of risk as it relates to mass gatherings and make a determination.  Swim Alberta believes it is in the best interest of our membership, after reviewing the Mass Gathering Assessment tool provided by the Government of Canada to postpone our provincial events.  Swim Alberta recognizes the impact this has to our athletes and coaches who have put in many hours of training over the course of the year and recognize also the critical qualifying period we are in for other provincial and national events, however the safety of our membership has always been and will remain our number one priority.

Next Steps

A full refund will be provided on all provincial meet fees.
Over the coming days, Swim Alberta will provide clubs additional information and details as it relates to Club Invitational Sanctions.  It is recognized that clubs may also need to make a determination with regards to their own decision to continue to plan and host upcoming events.  As more information becomes available to Swim Alberta to support clubs in making these difficult decisions, you have our commitment that we will provide you with updates.   Swim Alberta recognizes that this may have business implications to the club, but again the safety of all needs to be our priority at this time.

Swim Alberta will provide support and work with clubs to set-up, if able, time trials within club settings to provide athletes with an opportunity to race.  More information will be forthcoming on this initiative in the coming days.
Swim Alberta will continue to support club training activities, until such time as AHS or other authorities provide recommendations on this type of activity.  Clubs should be aware, that local facilities may determine a different course of action.  Swim Alberta will support the decision made by our facility partners across the province.  Swim Alberta is highly recommending that clubs train only in their home training environments and not travel outside of Canada at this time.

Supporting Swim Alberta Athletes

To our athletes, Swim Alberta recognizes that this has the greatest effect on you.  Please know that you always will and have always been our number one priority.  We remain proud to stand behind every Alberta Swimmer.
Swim Alberta remains committed to ensuring our membership is kept abreast of any new and changing information.   Please feel free to reach out directly to myself with any questions you may have by email at: [email protected] or by phone at 780-415-1780.

Kind Regards,

Cheryl Humphrey,  Executive Director
