DESCRIPTION

The Bethel Park Sharks is Bethel Park Recreation Swim Team’s year-round pre-competitive developmental swim program.  The program is geared towards introducing young athletes to the sport of competitive swimming without having the stricter training regimen that is recommended with the Bethel Park Recreation Swim Team’s year-round competitive swimming program.  Coaches will work daily with the athletes to help introduce them to all the basics of competitive swimming.  This includes but is not limited to the four strokes, legal starts and turns, reading a clock, practice habits, and what it means to be a good teammate.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR PLACEMENT

  • Be able to swim full length of the pool both freestyle and backstroke with some concept of face-down breathing on Freestyle.

BRONZE

DESCRIPTION

This is our stroke development group. Athletes in the Bronze Group will begin to develop proper stroke technique and good practice habits. While there is a slight focus on aerobic development, the focus for this group is teaching. Without developing correct techniques and good habits, swimmers who progress through the program will not gain the full benefits of work done in more advanced groups.  Athletes are recommended to compete monthly in local USA Swimming sanctioned competitions.

DESCRIPTION

The Silver Group builds on the stroke development learned in the Bronze practice and begins to develop the swimmers’ aerobic capacity. They will also begin to learn the basics of race strategy to help the athletes begin to understand best practices to maximize their performance in the water. While this group is geared towards athletes ages 8-12, in some circumstances, some 7-year-old athletes may swim in this group.  Athletes are recommended to compete monthly in local USA Swimming sanctioned competitions.

  • have a strong understanding in the 4 legal competitive strokes [butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, & freestyle]
  • have successfully completed the USA swimming dive/start progression [freestyle & backstroke]

DESCRIPTION

The Gold Training Group takes all the aspects of stroke development and beginner aerobic training that athletes learn in the Bronze and Silver groups and builds upon them to help athletes move from a focus on stroke development to beginning stroke refinement and valuable competitive training.  The athletes in this group expect an elevated heart rate during each workout.  We also begin to implement bodyweight strength training and yoga for athletes in this group.  Athletes are expected to compete monthly in local USA Swimming sanctioned competitions.

  • must have swum the 200 IM in a meet (legally)
  • must have swum the 500 freestyle in a meet
  • be able to complete 8 x 100 freestyle on 1:40 (on two separate occasions)
  • be able to complete 8 x 100 IM on 2:00 (on two separate occasions)

PLATINUM

DESCRIPTION

The Platinum Team is our advanced age group training group.  This group is for committed and motivated young swimmers who are looking to make swimming their primary athletic focus.  The focus of this group will be stroke refinement, aerobic training, and strength building.  Athletes will continue with strength training and yoga in this group and are expected to compete monthly in USA Swimming sanctioned swimming meets.

SENIOR

DESCRIPTION

The Senior Group is for our high school age and advanced age group athletes.  The focus for this group is stroke refinement, intense aerobic & strength training, and high performance.  Athletes are expected to compete monthly in USA Swimming sanctioned swim meets. 

SCHEDULE

The practice schedule will vary depending on the time of year.  Athletes can expect up to eight practice sessions per week as well as up to 5 additional strength training sessions.  Check the Practice Calendar for the current practice schedule.

COST

  • Season:  $1030.00 (billed October 1st)
  • 3 Payment Schedule:  $343.34 (billed October, January, and May)
  • 10 Monthly Payments:  $103.00 (October through July)

REQUIREMENTS FOR PLACEMENT

  • 9th and up/ start spring of 8th grade year
  • if not in 9th grade - 13-14 A time in an event [not 50 free] - maintain 90% attendance
  • need to swim 3 SC meets/ 2 LC meets

COLLEGE TRAINING GROUP

The College Training Group is for athletes who compete at the college level and return home during the summer and holidays to train.  This training group will follow the Senior Group practice schedule.  Please check out the Team Fees page for costs.  Athletes, please check in with Coach Kutrufis before registering. 

NON-RESIDENT HIGH SCHOOL TRAINING

This training group is for Non-Bethel Park residents who want to prepare for the upcoming high school season in the fall or continue with off-season training in the spring and summer.  This training group will follow the Senior Group practice schedule when Varsity Swimming & Diving is not in season.  During the Varsity Swimming & Diving Season, athletes will train with their respective high school teams. Please check out the Team Fees page for costs.
