Practice Groups

Developmental Level-Focus for this group is learning to swim all four or the swimming strokes as well as the basics for competitive swimming. Age range for this group is 6-12

The Developmental 1 is for children who can swim the length of the pool attempting to swim proper freestyle, with face in the water and breathing to the side. They must complete this unassisted and without stopping. The minimum age for this group is 6 years old. Developmental practices will introduce proper breath control, balance, sculling and rhythm skills. Stroke technique will focus on freestyle and backstroke. Streamline positioning and diving will also be introduced.

The Developmental 2 group will introduce the breaststroke and butterfly as well as continue to develop freestyle and backstroke technique, streamline position, and diving. We will introduce the beginning elements of flip turns and legal starts and finishes for freestyle and backstroke. Legal turns and finishes for each stroke will be learned and reinforced as well as continuing to develop freestyle, backstroke, streamline position, and diving. 

The Developmental 3 group will develop all four strokes and begin to prepare for longer swims. Starts, turns and finishes will be fine tuned as well. 

Developmental 4 group is used to help swimmers prepare for the increased demands of Age Group - longer practice sessions and additional practice days.

Age Group Level- The focus for this group is for swimmers to become competitive swimmers. Swimmers will refine all four strokes as well as building endurance and competitive swimming skills. Swimmers are required to attend three 90-120 minute practices a week.They also need to attend at least dryland and Swim Academy Class per week (part of practice) Age range for this group is 9-14

The Age Group Level practices will introduce some new elements into the practice routine. Dry land exercise and stretching will be added in addition to increased pool time. Dryland exercise and Swimming Academy Classes are a  part of their learning. Age Group level places a major emphasis on stroke, diving, and flip turn techniques. Yardage (2,000-4,000) will be increased, and timed sets will be standard and gradually increased.  Swimmers will be encouraged to set goals for the end of season AMS championship meet. Swimmers will also attend coaches meetings to go over their times and their goals. Swimmers will be encouraged to set goals for the end of season AMS championship meet. 

Junior and Senior Level-The focus for this group is for swimmers is high level competition and aerobic development. .They also need to attend at dryland as part of practice. Age range for this group is 11-18

Junior and Senior Level is the highest level of the Shaler Area Swim Club program. These swimmers will have refined their swimming ability to the point that they will be able to focus primarily on yardage. Yardage will be increased (4,000-7,000), starting to emphasize conditioning. Timed sets will become more demanding and the swimmers will need to show a tolerance for the increased practice yardage and length of the practice session. Dry land exercises are an integral part of the practice routine.  Swimmers will be encouraged to set goals for the every meet and will have long term goals set for the end of season championship meet. Swimmers will also attend coaches meetings to go over their times and their goals.
