WHAT Swim School - Summer 2021

 

WHAT Swim School is a Woodland Hills Aquatic Team program committed to making swimming safe and fun at all levels. Knowing how to swim lasts a lifetime—your child will reap the benefits of swimming long after lessons end. We offer group lessons in 8 week sessions throughout the year. 

 

 

Summer Session Information and Fees: 

 

Dates: Mondays starting June 14, 2021 and ending August 9, 2021

  • Note - There will be no classes on Monday July 5, 2021

Fees:

  • $100 for 8 – 30 minute small group lessons (Parent & Toddler; Level 1; Level 2; Level 3)
  • $120 for 8 – 45 minute small group lessons (Level 4; Level 5)

 

Important: COVID-19 Safety Protocols for Swim School: (Updated 6/1/2021)

In order to make sure we follow all guidelines and respect the rules and regulations set forth by the CDC, Allegheny County Health Dept as well as the Woodland Hills School District, WHAT Swim School has put in place the following procedures:

  • Parent/Guardian will be met at the rear pool entrance door where the instructor or lifeguard will sign their child/children in and direct them to the assigned seating area. (Under no circumstances will anyone enter through the school) 
  • Parent/Guardian will be required to sign a liability waiver for the school district and WHAT Swim School for their swimmer(s) before entering the facility. 
  • Each class will have an assigned seating area on the pool deck to wait for their lesson to begin and to leave their belongings. 
  • One Parent/Guardian will be permitted to accompany their child into the pool and will be directed to the assigned seating area. Parent/Guardian can remain during the class in the assigned seating area.  
  • Our locker rooms will only be open for bathroom emergencies so please have them changed and ready to swim.  Upon exiting the pool, they will not be permitted to change in the locker rooms.  Swimmers can pull clothes over their swim suits or wrap in a towel to exit through the same back pool doors.

Registration 

When registering, please select the confirm button at the bottom of the registration process. You should receive a confirmation email when registration is successfully completed. 

When classes are filled, please register on the waitlist.  

 

Canceled Registrations 

Canceled registrations will be subject to a $5 processing fee if done prior to the beginning of class. Canceling a registration after the class has started will result in you being charged the entire cost of the class.

WHAT Swim School Lesson Descriptions:   

Parent/Toddler (Ages 12 to 36 months) 

This 30-minute class is for swimmers age 12 months to 36 months. Parent/adult accompaniment in the water is required. This class will provide parents with water safety knowledge and practices for young swimmers. Swimmers will gain water adjustment and swimming readiness skills in a fun and enjoyable environment while interacting with their peers.  

  

Level 1: Water Adjustment (Ages 3 - 10) 

This 30-minute class is for children at least 3 years old and are able to follow the directions of the instructor without their parent being in the water. Please register for the Parent/Toddler class if the child is between 36 and 48 months and needs to have a parent with them to participate. Students in this level are usually scared of the water, are unable to float or glide in the water. To pass this level swimmers need to be able to perform the following skills: 

  • Blowing bubbles 
  • floating unassisted 
  • submerge face multiple times without stopping 
  • glide short distance unassisted with flutter kick 
  • walk in shallow water (disregarded depending on student's height) 

 

Level 2: Beginner (Ages 4 - 12) 

This 30-minute class is for children at least 4 years old. Students are able to float unassisted, glide a short distance unassisted with face in the water. To pass this level swimmers should be able to: 

  • swim freestyle or back stroke ¼ of a 25-yard pool 
  • Jump in water that is overhead and return to wall without assistance 
  • Retrieve underwater objects 

 

Level 3: Intermediate (Ages 4 - 12) 

This 30-minute class is for swimmers working towards swimming 1/2 the length of a 25-yard pool unassisted and have no fear of shallow water. To pass level 3 swimmer should be able to perform the following: 

  • swim over ½ pool Freestyle and Backstroke with good technique 
  • swim and jump in deep water without fear 
  • tread water for 30 seconds 
  • Rudimentary rotary breathing 

 

Level 4: Advanced (Ages 5 - 12) 

This 45-minute class is for swimmers not afraid of deep water and working to swim a length of the pool Freestyle and Backstroke. Swimmers should be able to tread water for 1 minute. Swimmers who can perform multiple laps in a row with fairly good technique may register for the Level 5 class or the swim team. To pass this level swimmers should be able to: 

  • Dive 
  • Swim 25 freestyle and backstroke with good technique 
  • Do rudimentary Butterfly and Breaststroke 
  • Rotary breathing 

Swimmers who pass Level 4 may join the Level 5 class or the swim team. 

  

Level 5: Pre-competitive (Ages 5 - 12) 
This 45-minute class provides swimmers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of competitive swimming in a fun, no-pressure atmosphere. Swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool freestyle or backstroke without stopping.  Goals: Swim 25 yards of freestyle with bilateral breathing, swim 25 yards of each backstroke, breaststroke, and fly. Focus will be on swimmer’s technique. Swimmers who can swim a lap of all 4 competitive strokes may be ready to join the Swim Team. 

 

Adult Learn to Swim (Ages 13 and Older) 

Learn to conquer your fears! Our goal is getting you comfortable in the water by learning floating techniques, survival skills and basic water strokes. The class will be tailored to meet each participant’s needs.
