Glacier Swim Club (GSC) was founded by parents in 1973 and through the years has developed into a first-class competitive swim program. We are proud of the youth who swim with GSC, and we believe that the lessons our athletes learn through our club will make these kids successful long after they've left the GSC family. We work to maximize every swimmer's athletic and personal potential. During our practices and team-building activities, we concentrate on character development, team unity, family participation, a safe and positive environment, and community partnership.

As a non-profit organization, the monthly dues that we charge our families are only part of the money required to cover all of the operational costs our team sees each year. We simply cannot generate enough revenue in membership and dues to cover our operating expenses. GSC works in cooperation with Parks and Recreation and depends on not only the support of the City & Borough of Juneau but the generosity of our local businesses, family, friends and fellow community members. In order to keep the program accessible to the majority of families in Juneau, we need to fundraise. This is where our annual Aqualaps fundraiser has always come to the rescue. Aqualaps helps close the financial gap, allowing us to continue to provide a premier and affordable sports program to the youth of our community.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, GSC has faced many challenges over the last 12 months, such as:
• Early and immediate cancellation of our 2020 Aqualaps fundraising campaign.
• Complete cancelation of the Juneau School District Learn to Swim Program, where GSC provides 2 weeks of swim lessons to over 400 4th graders.
• Complete cancelation of our Masters swim program.
• Temporary shutdown of all swimming operations (over 4 months total).
• The elimination of all swim competition with outside teams.
• Reduced capacity and limited introductory programs to our club, which has reduced our membership and created a long term issue of building the club back to its former size.

Although the impact to our club (not unlike so many others) has been significant, we would be remised to not share with you our club’s successes. We are proud of what we have been able to provide our Juneau youth during these turbulent and uncertain past 12 months.
• When so many athletic and community offerings were understandably cancelled, GSC immediately developed remote “dryland” workouts for our members as a way to remain connected and active.
• Masked open air workouts were introduced and advanced as we worked with CBJ to find a safe way to move our youth back in the water.
• By mid-July, many of our swimmers were finally back in the water. Swim workout frequency and length were significantly reduced and definitely looked different than before, but the results were outstanding, and our swimmers were ecstatic to have somewhere to go and something to do.
• In lieu of traditional competitions, GSC has continued to host small time trials in order to help our athletes realize their accomplishments in the water. Most recently, GSC has provided opportunities for competition in the form of inter-squad meets, which have been a real treat to watch.

While the financial impact of those challenges was significant to our club, thankfully we were able to remain in operation through the help of local, state and federal relief programs. We are forever grateful for this relief. GSC has a long history and a strong foundation. We will survive! However, this was an unfortunate hit to our program and will take years to recover.

While we had hoped to return to our ‘normal’ Aqualaps fundraising for the spring of 2021, we simply are not comfortable with face to face fundraising just yet. We hope that in 2022, you will once again see our smiling swimmers’ faces throughout the community in a more personal fundraising effort. Until that time, our fundraising will be through electronic channels only. Online donations and checks of any amount are welcomed and very much appreciated during this challenging time. Checks can be made out to Glacier Swim Club and mailed to P.O. Box 35382, Juneau AK 99803.

By donating to GSC, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you, too, are a member of our team and are touching the lives of youth in our community.

Thank you for your consideration.
