Weekly Updates 5/5/20

Scott Griffith

Hello GSC Swimmers and Families!

Wow, hard to believe this will be week 8 of no swimming.  I have a few updates, please communicate to your swimmers.

  • We are deleting the Orca/Chinook Band app and making one Band app for all 6th-12th graders.  If you are already signed up under Sockeye/Shark, you do not need to do anything (although we might change the name of this group).  If you are not signed up or were with Chinook/Orca, please use the invite below to join the new group.  I will keep the Orca/Chinook group for a week, but we will NOT be posting workouts or updates on this app anymore.

  • If your account is still active, and you do not wish to pay full dues for May, please contact Amy Bowers or myself by May 5 to switch to the retainer group ($10/month).  For those of you continuing to pay dues, THANK YOU!  Please remember, you may request a receipt after we are back offering practices for any dues paid during closure.  All dues paid are eligible for tax deduction under the CARES act even if you do not itemize.  I think the limit is $300.
  • Last chance to get your name in the hat for a GSC parka (or equal funds toward a new Speedo swim suit)!!  Coho's/Sea Lions need to find the golden fin on the Auke Lake trail, Sockeye-Orca have to find swimmer Ken at Cedar Lake.  Drawing will take place the week of May 11 during our ZOOM meetings.
  • All Summer meets have been canceled by USA Swimming.  There may be a virtual AK Summer Champs IF teams are back up and swimming soon.
  • The governor's next announcement on opening businesses is May 8.  If and when pools are opened, please note that there will be some major changes to how GSC is allowed to operate.  This will be dependent of national and state health mandates.  Most likely, we will be limited to one swimmer per lane.  I do not have a clear picture how practices will operate at this time, but wanted to make sure everyone is aware that it will be awhile before things go back to 'normal'.  I do not anticipate swimmers having to wear a mask in the pool, however!
  • Thank you to all who have reached out to the assembly members about the importance of Augustus Brown Pool renovations.  I see this on the agenda for the Assembly Finance Committee on May 6, 5:00 pm. The city manager's 30 month Macro Budget Tool shows removal of funds for AGB renovations.  If you would like your opinion to be heard, I recommend contacting your assembly members before then.
  • It has been SO GREAT to see the swimmers during our weekly Zoom meetings!  Dates and login info are posted on the GSC website.
    • Coho/Sea Lion Tuesday's at 4:00 pm
    • Sockeye/Shark Wednesday's at 4:00 pm
    • Chinook/Orca Thursday's at 4:00 pm.  We will have a guest college swimmer every week for this group.
  • Weather and health dependent, we hope to offer our first outside group dryland on May 15.  More details soon.  Also, we are hoping to host a team dryland challenge, Murph, on Memorial Day.
