Mesa Aquatics Club Team Training Groups

Athletes will be placed in training groups based on an evaluation by our staff or at coaches discretion. A swimmers age for placement in this group is determined by the age they will be at end of the championship season based on when the Arizona Age Group State Championship  & Senior State Championship. 

Age Group:

Discovery ($77) 

 

Group Emphasis: The main focus of this group will be on increasing efficiency in all 4 strokes.   There will be a very large emphasis on developing a strong and consistent kick for all four strokes.  Swimmers will receive basic instruction for racing starts and turns. Swimmers will begin to implement underwater dolphin kicks and streamlines.  In addition, this group will improve their fundamentals of turns and starts for all strokes. 

There will be a daily dryland component designed to increase the physical literacy of each athlete.  Practices will be educational and swimmers will have fun!

Technical Requirements

  • Must be able to proficiently swim 50 yards of freestyle (with rotary breathing) and 

  • Must be able to proficiently swim 50 yards of backstroke

Must have working knowledge of butterfly and breaststroke

A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approve of placement in the group.

 

Performance Requirements: 

There are no performance requirements for Discovery.

 

Competition Expectations: 

 Discovery swimmers will compete in MAC hosted Fun meets as well as MAC and local sanctioned meets, at the discretion of the group coach.

 

Schedule: 3 - 1 hour practices per week

Explorer ($97)

 

Group Emphasis: Fun and Swimming: Training fundamentals are focused on set progressions emphasizing aerobic capacity and skill development. Learning and understanding the use of the pace clock, send-offs (“go” times), and set time management (descending, negative split). Competition is used to test and refine skills which include racing splits, stroke count and tempo.  Swimmers will continue the development of proper stroke mechanics for all strokes, as well as starts and turns.  There will be introduction to higher levels of competition. Swimmers will build on the incorporation of the underwater dolphin kick, with 3 dolphin kicks off of each wall.   There will be the addition of dedicated dryland training sessions in addition to their daily on deck warm-up.  There will continue to be a large emphasis on developing a strong and consistent kick for all four strokes.   Swimmers will exhibit leadership skills both in and out of the pool and represent Mesa Aquatic Club to the best of their ability, with a team first mentality.

To be considered for this group:

Technical Requirements: 

Must be able to swim a 100 yard individual medley without stopping.  

Must be technically proficient in all 4 strokes.

Must be able to execute a flip turn.

Must meet the USA Swimming certifications standards for racing starts.  

Must have a basic understanding of  long & short axis turns and breaststroke pull-outs.

Must consistently streamline and dolphin kick off of every wall

A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approve of placement in the group.

 

Performance Requirements: 

Must have competed in all four (4) strokes in a meet.

6x50 free @ 1:30

100 IM 

Kick 50 free with board under 1:30 

Tight streamline w/ 2 dolphin kicks of every wall

 

Competition Expectations:  Explorer  swimmers will be expected to compete in MAC hosted Fun meets, as well as AZ swimming sanctioned meets  Some athletes may attend out of state family travel meets with their coach’s approval.  In addition, any swimmer that qualifies for an Arizona Swimming Championship meet is expected to compete in individual events and relays, FOR THE TEAM.

 

Training Equipment:  Fins, kickboard, snorkel, pull-buoy, band 

 

Voyager ($97)

Group Emphasis: This group focuses on skill development and learning the basics of swimming with an emphasis in becoming a well-rounded swimmer and athlete.  There will be two dedicated dryland training sessions in addition to their daily on deck warm-up.  There will  be a large emphasis on developing a strong and consistent kick for all four strokes.   There will be instruction on how to read a pace clock, follow intervals on various sets, learn how to circle swim, acquire appropriate lane etiquette, learn to wear the correct competitive swimming attire, and how to become a great teammate.

Swimmers will learn to incorporate the underwater dolphin kick.

To be considered for this group:

Technical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to proficiently swim 50 yards of freestyle (with rotary breathing) and 50 yards of backstroke,

  • Must have a working knowledge of breaststroke and butterfly

  • A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approval of placement in the group.

 

Performance Requirements: 

There are no performance requirements for Explorer

 

Competition Expectations:  Voyager swimmers do not have a competition requirement but will be encouraged to swim in MAC hosted Fun meets and will be able to swim in AZ sanctioned swimming meets at the discretion of the group coach.

 

Training Equipment:  Fins, kickboard, snorkel, pull-buoy, band, paddles

 

Challenger Silver ($118) 

 

Group Emphasis: Swimmers will continue the development of proper stroke mechanics for all strokes, as well as starts and turns. Challenger Silver  provides a strong   emphasis  on aerobic conditioning and total athlete development. Swimmers at this stage are encouraged to focus on training for the individual medley and improving and competing in all 4 strokes .There will be dedicated dryland training sessions in addition to their daily on deck warm-up.  There will continue to be a large emphasis on developing a strong and consistent kick for all four strokes.  Heart rate and tempo training will be introduced. Swimmers will build on the incorporation of the underwater dolphin kick. Swimmers will exhibit leadership skills both in and out of the pool and represent Mesa Aquatic Club to the best of their ability, with a team first mentality.

 

To be considered for this group:

 

Technical Requirements: 

  • Must be technically proficient in all 4 strokes.

  • Must be technically proficient in long & short axis turns and be able to perform breaststroke pull-outs.

  • Must consistently streamline and incorporate 4 dolphin kicks throughout races and practices

  • Must meet the USA Swimming certifications standards for racing starts.  

  • A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approve of placement in the group.

 

Performance Requirements: 

  • Must have an IMX score in all 10 and under IMX events

  • Must be able to kick 8x 50 freestyle @ 1:15

  • Must be able to swim 5 x 100 IM @ 2:30

  • Must be able to swim 10x50 free @ :50

  • Must have 4 MAC Challenger Silver times

  • Must be technically proficient in long & short axis turns and be able to perform breaststroke pull-outs.

  • A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approve of placement in the group.

Challenger Gold ($139)

 

Group Emphasis: 

This group will emphasize more advanced stroke technique for all strokes, including refined starts and turns.   Goal setting and mental training will also be introduced.  All previous instruction will be continued and advanced.  Swimmers in this group will continue aerobic development and the development of  underwater speed. Training methodology and heart rate work will be learned in this group.  Swimmers will begin to work more with race strategy.  Swimmers are taught the variables of stroke rate and stroke length and how they work together, race splits are tracked and individually monitored in  this group .  Dryland takes on a greater importance to the athlete and will be emphasized with 5 dedicated sessions per week. Swimmers must exhibit leadership skills in and out of the pool and be able to represent Mesa Aquatic Club to the best of their ability with a team first mentality. Swimmers will be prepared for a successful transition into elite level senior swimming. 

 

To be considered for this group

 

Technical Requirements: 

  • Must be technically proficient in all 4 strokes.

  • Must have an IMX score in all 11-12 IMX events

  • Must be technically proficient in long & short axis turns and be able to perform breaststroke pull-outs.

  • Must consistently incorporate 4 underwater dolphin kicks off of walls.

  • Must meet the USA Swimming certifications standards for racing starts.  

  • A MAC coach must conduct the evaluation and approve of placement in the group.

 

Performance Requirements: 

 
  • 4x MAC Gold Time Standards

  • Must have competed in a 200 IM in a meet.

  • Must be able to swim 10 x 100 freestyle @ 1:30

  •  swim 5x200 IM @4:00

  • kick 10 x 50 @ 1:05

Competition Expectations:  Challenger Gold swimmers are expected to compete in all eligible MAC hosted meets, as well as other eligible AZ Swimming sanctioned swimming meets.  Athletes are also eligible to attend travel meets outside of our LSC upon qualifying and at coaches discretion.   Any Challenger Gold swimmer who qualifies for an Arizona Swimming Championship meet is expected to compete in individual events and relays,  FOR THE TEAM.


Training Equipment:  Fins, kickboard, snorkel, pull-buoy, band, paddles

Seniors

S3 ($97) Senior Fitness & High School Development = Anyone that wants to swim to stay in shape for high school season or just general fitness.  No competition is required but is still encouraged. There are no attendance requirements for this group. 

A swimmers age for placement in this group is determined by the age they will be at end of the championship season based on when the Arizona Age Group State Championship  & Senior State Championship.

S2 ($148) = Swimmers actively pursuing or already achieving Senior State level qualifying times or better.  Athletes are expected to attend a high percentage of  the workouts offered on a year around basis. Local meets including Arizona Senior States should be attended and out of state championship meets up to Far Westerns level are highly encouraged.

A swimmers age for placement in this group is determined by the age they will be at end of the championship season based on when the Arizona Age Group State Championship  & Senior State Championship.

S1 ($179) = Participation must be approved by head coach. Athletes in this group are approaching or have achieved Far Western qualifying times. Athletes are expected to maintain 80%+ attendance on a year around basis and commit to attend select local meets on our meet calendar as well as the highest level, out of state/championship meet they are qualified for.  Must be able to travel to different pools for combined S1 workouts as needed.

A swimmers age for placement in this group is determined by the age they will be at end of the championship season based on when the Arizona Age Group State Championship  & Senior State Championship.

NTG ($199) = Participation must be approved by head coach. Athletes in this group are approaching or have achieved Sectional qualifying times. Athletes are expected to make all practices available year around and commit to all NTG designated meets on our meet calendar as well as the highest level, out of state/championship meet they are qualified for.  Must be able to travel to different pools for combined NTG workouts as needed.

- Post Grad ($300/year) = This group is for HS graduates looking to continue training, either consistantly or when home on college breaks. 

A swimmers age for placement in this group is determined by the age they will be at end of the championship season based on when the Arizona Age Group State Championship  & Senior State Championship.
