Yingjie Lin Coach

Coach Lin received his B.S. in Engineering Mechanics from Tsinghua University (China) in 1982, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UTEP in 1994.

Coach Lin became involved with swimming in 2002 when his daughter began her swimming career. He started his coaching career in 2005 with another swim team and became head coach of the WETT Senior group in 2008.

As the Head Coach of WETT, Coach Lin has produced multiple local, state and national top level swimmers. WETT age group swimmers have won multiple state championships, set state records and have been ranked in the top 10 in US Swimming. Under Coach Lin’s instruction and guidance, one of WETT’s age group swimmers has also set multiple Mexican National age group records. Also, WETT Senior swimmers have won multiple high school District, Regional and State Championships, have qualified for Junior Nationals and Nationals meets and have even finished top eight in the Junior National meet. One of WETT’s senior swimmers won Sectionals Championship as well. Also, WETT girls hold the most records in the Border Region

Coach Lin is an Engineer by day and a Volunteer Coach by night! Each afternoon after his DAY JOB, Coach Lin spends two HAPPY hours on the pool deck with the WETT Swimmers! He enjoys every minute he spends with his swimmers!

Isaac Valles Coach

Coach Isaac grew up swimming in the private summer league swim program.  At 14 he started swimming competitively for the El Paso Aqua Posse and was a Junior National Qualifier in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke.  He swam for Leo Cancellare at Cathedral High School and Richard Sybesma at Texas Christian University.

Isaac was a swim coach in the late ‘90’s for Piedmont Hills Swim Team (7yrs.) and the El Paso Aqua Posse (3 yrs.).He started volunteering for WETT when his children became interested in competitive swimming.

Vianney Trujillo Coach

One of the original members of WETT starting back in 2003. She swam with WETT for 10 years till graduating from Bel Air high school, and going on to swim for college at Wayland Baptist University. She has previously been involved with coaching and assisting children of all ages from elementary to high school, along with special Olympics throughout her years in college. There she went on to qualify for nationals all 4 years in 100/200 breaststroke and 200 IM events. She graduated with her B.S and now is currently in pursuit of finished her nursing degree.

Miguel Cardenas Coach

Coach Miguel grew up swimming in San Antonio and Del Rio, TX specializing in long-distance events and diving. He received his BIS from UTEP and his coaching credentials from USA Swimming and the American Swim Coaches Association. Coach Miguel has coached in El Paso for 20 years and has coached several swimmers to the state level as a member of EPAP. He has also taught beginning and advanced swim classes for UTEP's P3 program. Coach Miguel joined the WETT coaching staff in 2019

When not coaching, Coach Miguel enjoys music, whether it is playing the ukelele or guitar or just listening.  He studied music at UTEP, and sang in several choirs including Classical and Jazz. He also enjoys tying knots, building kites, cooking (because he loves to eat!), baking and he loves slow-smoked BBQ.

 

Manuel Griego Coach

Manny was born in El Paso and as a lifelong resident, attended Wiggs MS and Eastwood HS. A former WETT swimmer himself, he was coached by Dow Farley, Bill Ragland, and Jack Linn. TAGs, Zones, Sectionals qualifier and still holds the WETT record for 13-14 1650 Free. In high school coached by Steve Flato, he was the 500 Free District Champion and record holder from 2014 thru 2019.  Manny earned a swimming scholarship and attended Wayland Baptist University and Lindsey Wilson College during which he qualified for NAIA Nationals in the 400 IM, 500 Free, and 1650 Free while achieving his bachelor’s degree. He plans on continuing his education by pursuing his Master’s degree. In addition to coaching, he is a proud special education teacher for Gadsden ISD.

As an adolescent I had a lot of energy. Swimming was my tool that helped me with structure and to focus on attaining my educational and future coaching goals.  For me swimming created a lot of fond memories with my parents and other swim families for which I am grateful. Have fun, create memories, and persevere.

Coach Manny Griego

Celeste Hirschi Coach

Celeste grew up in the WETT family, as her older sisters joined the team in 2003. Her swimming career started at the ripe age of four and continued as a member of WETT for the next 14 years. She currently attends Loretto Academy and will graduate May of 2021. She is heading off to the University of Notre Dame in the fall.  During her high school career, she medaled at TAPPS Regionals all four years and TAPPS State in the 100 Breast her junior year. The WETT family has a very special place in her heart and she is very excited to be able to continue as a coach!

Matthew Tovar Coach

Matthew Tovar was a summer leaguer turned club team swimmer. He started his swimming journey at the age of 9 at Eastwood Heights Swimming Pool. Once in middle school, he moved to DSSC to be more competitive and serious with the sport. In high school he swam for Eastwood High School under coach Steve Flato. During his time there, he qualified for the 6-A Regional Swim Meet and was apart of a State Champion Team. He was also a swim safety instructor and taught hundreds of non swimmers how to swim. Coach Tovar has previously coached the Hawkins Hurricanes swim and winter league team. His future plans are to become a teacher as he is in his last year of his educational degree at the University of Texas at El Paso. He has a passion to create a better future for all. 

Perla Retana Coach

Coach Perla Renata swam four years in high school for Austin High School. She continued her post secondary athletic career as a student athlete running four years in college at EPCC and UTEP. Coach Perla has taught swimming to children and adults for 20 years coaching for both Desert Sharks and WETT. She is a Physician Associate working at Sun City Kidney by profession. Her interests outside of working and coaching include running, swimming, cycling, hiking, reading, and playing with Mateo who swims with WETT in the Silver group.
