Swim Programs

Each swimmer is assessed by one of our professional coaches and then placed into a suitable swim program. We offer three programs largely based on swimming ability. There are several levels within each program and each level demands specific commitments from the swimmer and the swimmer’s family, both in time and financial support. The swim season lasts from September to May or June for our FUNdamentals and Developmental groups. The season for most other groups finishes at the end of June, while some highly skilled competitive swimmers may continue on through to mid-August.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, new protocols from the Government of Ontario and the City of Burlington have been put into place, and the number of participants allowed in the pool are drastically reduced.

At this point we have no choice but to adapt to “a new normal” requirement. We are aiming to preserve our Club’s original Program structure, but with a reduced number of groups / swimmers in each of our Programs.

The following descriptions outline the Swim Programs under "Pre-COVID" conditions.  During COVID, we will have altered swim schedules and age restrictions. Swim meets will be on hold at this time.

Learn2Swim

The Learn2Swim program is for children aged 5 to 8 years of age and introduces some of the technical aspects of swimming skills while still having fun.  This beginner program focuses on basic movements and abilities needed for swimming competitive strokes with an emphasis on freestyle and backstroke.

Learn2Swim swimmers attend one 60-minute practices a week. The swim season lasts from September to May.

Swimmers must be able to complete one continuous length of a 25-metre pool (no specific stroke) to be accepted into this program.

FUNdamentals

The FUNdamentals program is for children aged 5 to 10 years of age and introduces some of the technical aspects of swimming skills while still having fun.  This beginner program focuses on basic movements and abilities needed for swimming competitive strokes with an emphasis on freestyle and backstroke.

FUNdamentals swimmers attend two 45-minute practices a week. Several practice time options are offered.  The swim season lasts from September to May.

Swimmers must be able to complete one continuous length of a 25-metre pool (no specific stroke) to be accepted into this program.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              During COVID-19 restrictions, the age group for this program will be altered to age 6-9.

Development

The Development program is designed for swimmers aged 12 years old and under who have mastered the basics (either through our FUNdamentals program or city/private lessons) and are now ready to be introduced to competitive swimming.  Practices consist of stroke work to build skills, endurance work to gain strength, and “quality” to increase speed.  All four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) are taught in this program.  Swimmers participate at smaller local meets. This program is split into two levels based on ability.

Novice 1 and 2

Novice is BAD’s entry level into competitive swimming and is for swimmers aged 11 and under. Novice practices are 1 hour in length, three times a week. The swim season lasts from September to May.

Junior 1 and 2

Junior is for swimmers up to 12 years of age. Junior practices four times a week (1 to 1 1/2 hour sessions).  The swim season lasts from September to May.

During COVID-19 restrictions, BAD will only run two small Novice groups and one Junior group.  The age group for these programs will be restricted to age 9&under for Novice and 10&under for Junior.

Competitive

The Competitive program is designed for swimmers who have developed strong swimming skills and wish to regularly compete and have demonstrated a willingness to commit to a more rigorous training program. Swimmers are expected to regularly attend practices, have a positive attitude, be punctual and attend competitive meets.

There are six levels within this program.  Each swimmer is placed in the appropriate level based not only on ability but also with some consideration for the swimmer’s age. The swimmers are expected to maintain specific performance criteria as established by the Head Coach to stay in their level.

Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2

Swimmers in these levels/groups have achieved specific time standards at competitive meets, as well as performance standards during regular practice sessions. Swimmers may be up to 13 years of age.  Practices range from 1 1/2 to 2 hours in length, 5-6 times a week. Swimmers in Intermediate will swim from September to mid-August.

Senior 3 and Senior 4

Senior 3 and 4 is designed for swimmers aged 12 and over who are competent in all four strokes and wish to train and compete. Practices range from 1 1/2 to 2 hours in length, 4-6 times a week. Swimmers in these groups swim from September to mid-July.

Senior 1 and Senior 2

Swimmers in these levels/groups have achieved specific time standards at competitive meets, as well as performance standards during regular practice sessions. Athletes (13 years and older) in these groups are very focused on their competitive swimming and demonstrate their desire for constant improvement on a daily basis through regularly attending practice, meeting performance standards and exhibiting exceptional work ethic.  Practices are 8-9 times a week and range from 1 3/4 to 2 hours in length. Swimmers in these levels swim from September to July while some elite level swimmers may swim on through to August.

During COVID-19 restrictions, BAD will run smaller groups for Senior 3 and 4.  The age group for these programs will be restricted to age 16&under for Senior 3 and age 13 only for Senior 4.  We will look to increasing the age groups restrictions in January.
