Belleville Swimming Coaches' Update - April 5, 2019

Apr 5, 2019

We have launched an updated website that’s easier to navigate. Please check it out at

The 2019 Swim-A-Thon is happening tomorrow morning from 8-10am for the Senior and Age Group Performance swimmers, then again from 10am-12pm for the Age Group Development, Novice and Jr. BYST. Please arrive 15 minutes before your start time for activation and lane assignments. Last year’s results can be see HERE

Everyone will need to bring someone along to count for them. Clipboards, counting sheets, pencils and stop watches will be provided for the counters. Note:  stopwatches will lose the hundredths after the 40-minute mark; not an issue. There will be prizes awarded to the top fundraiser and fastest swimmer to complete the swim from each group.

Topper’s Pizza will be donating pizza before noon. The Senior and Age Group Performance swimmers will have muffins, yogurt and juice available following their swim and they may come back for pizza later if they’d like. Please go to the Minor Sports Meeting Room, upstairs above the Wally Dever Arena.

Whether you are collecting pledges or not, we hope to see everyone out to swim the entire 5km (200 lengths) or as many as they can do in 2 hours (1 hour for Jr. BYST, unless they choose to stay longer). Anyone who is unable to make it Saturday, we encourage you to still swim the event another time, possibly during a lane swim. All Seniors must complete the swim before the end of the month.

Senior Update:

The Senior swimmers are working extremely hard and the training intensity is at a season high. In 20 years as a professional coach, I’ve been impressed many times, however, recently many athletes have amazed me with what they’ve accomplished in the pool and at dry-land. Although it’s quite tough to relay the message to the Senior Group on how good they really are, I feel many are finally believing in their abilities and realizing their potential. Training sets have been challenging over the past few weeks, but when the athletes have been at the top of their game, they’ve defeated everything I’ve thrown their way. I’m grateful to coach so many athletes that have exuberant personalities and are willing to do whatever it takes to make themselves better everyday.

Following a solid showing at Provincials and Ontario Youth Junior Championships, we took some well deserved time off. When everyone returned, they were more focused than ever before and we completed some gruesome training with minimal complaining. The vigorous two-hour long course workout at the Pan Am Centre was deemed easy by some and I perceive that as good news as it shows that these athletes are prepared to race as we spend next week doing meet preparation. I truly believe we are ready to throw down some huge races next weekend between Eastern Canadian Open and the Markham Invitational. I’m very excited to see what this spring and summer bring results wise. I try my best to bring a performance oriented approach to these swimmers everyday; sometimes it’s received well and other times it’s a struggle. In the end, all the work we have put in should lead to exceptional outcomes over the remainder of the season!

Congratulations to Owen for moving up to Senior Performance! He has shown tremendous improvement and fits in perfectly in the group. Going forward, we are in store for great meets in Gatineau and then both Regionals and Provincials, before we head off to California for Far Western Championships!

Age Group Update:

Age group swimmers have kicked off spring with a big splash! We had 18 Age Groupers attend our long course training session at the Pan Am pool last Saturday, complete with some great team bonding time on the bus ride, tough sets in the water and a pizza dinner on the way home. Thank you to all the swimmers who came out to spend their Saturday night training. We now move into a busy month with Swim-a-thon this Saturday, OYO on Sunday, followed by the MAC Invitational April 11-14. We still have lots of work to do, and Age groupers are looking stronger than ever as we head into this next training phase.

Regionals may seem far off right now, but it will be here before you know it! With less than two month before the meet, it is time to put extra focus on your sleep, nutrition and attendance. NOW is the time to prepare for Regionals and Festivals. It is time to reflect on your goal sheet, recognize how far you have come and determine what you need to do to achieve your next goal.

This month we are putting an extra focus on our activation. Swimmers are reminded to be on deck 15 minutes prior to practice (10 minutes for mornings) to complete the full activation and to be fully engaged in each movement, which is crucial for injury prevention.

Effective April 1st we have had some swimmer movement. Age Group Development is pleased to welcome Ethan Li and Mya Rezac to the group, while Age Group Performance is happy to welcome Myles Jackson and Sophie O’Neill.

Reminder to commit to the Gatineau Open by April 16th.  Any two qualifying standards allows for 6 events. Please review qualifying standards below:

We are in the last session of our season and our last promotion for the year was made when Mya Rezac and Ethan Li took the jump to Age Group Development where they will be joining their fellow Novice teammates, Laney, Lizzie, Maddy, Logan and Francis! We wish them and the rest of Alumni Novice all the very best moving forward!  With that being said, we are excited to roll over a new chapter in our program with some new additions that include Rayan, Finn and Adrian, along with the other recent additions, Logan, Adam, Ashlynn, Leah, Tamas and Maisie. We have some quick swimmers joining us from Jr. BYST and we are pumped to get to work and finish the season strong!

Junior BYST Update:

With our winter session coming to an end we want to congratulate our Jr. BYST swimmers on a fantastic start to 2019. Every Jr. BYST swimmer that attended the SWOTT meet at the end of February demonstrated major time drops. Coaches are extremely proud with how hard the Jr. BYST have been working and we look forward to having to having many of them race in Ottawa at the OYO meet as well as in Ernestown on April 13th. Our next session starts Monday April 8 and will wrap up with our home meet on June 22.

Congratulations to Finn Luke-Weitzman, Rayan Mecky and Adrian Black who have now moved into the Novice program. We look forward to welcoming some new recruits to the Jr. BYST program next week.

All Jr. BYST are encouraged to attend the OSHAC Spring Fling on May 25th in Oshawa. Please confirm your attendance to this meet by May 14th here:

This will be the last away meet opportunity for Jr. BYST for the season. If you have any questions please direct them to Coach Kristin at

Junior Masters:

Jr. Masters is continuing to roll with some new faces and bodies in the water! Our program is moving ahead well with some fast swimming and lots of laughs and smiles along the way.  This program has been a lot of fun to be apart of as a coach, spectator and hopefully for the swimmers as well! Let’s finish strong while having a blast in the water.

Masters continues to strive forward into our last session of the season.  We had some great swimming performances as several of our swimmers competed in our first meet in 2019 and were even able to put together a relay!! On top of that our training has continued to strive forward with average swimming meters per practice surpassing the 2K mark.  We look forward to having a few more swimmers join our program for the final session and are excited to see how many metres we can swim before the year is out!
