Belleville Swimming – Coaches’ Update – June 14, 2019

This is the final Coaching Update of the season. In the fall, we will be resurrecting the newsletter, the BYST Bulletin, except this time it will be titled the Beast Bulletin. As of September 2019, Belleville Swimming will no longer be referred to as the BYST (Belleville Youth Swim Team), we will officially be called the Belleville Beast Swim Team (BBST). We have gone through this process to drop the Youth connotation and no longer hear the mispronunciation of the “BYST” moniker. Going forward into the 2019/2020 swim season, the Belleville Swimming will be known as the Belleville Beast Swim Team (BBST)!

There will be no dry-land on Saturday, June 15 for the Seniors (suggest a run outside or on the track) as Coach Brandon will be covering Age Group practices while Coach Kristin is away at Ontario Festivals. Good luck to Brendan, Caelen, Austin, Maeve and Ethan as they race Ontario's best 13 & under swimmers at the Markham Pan Am Pool!

St. Lawrence Pools Demo Day – Saturday, June 15

On Saturday, June 15, we will be participating in a Hydrapool demonstration day at St. Lawrence Pools and running a barbecue with hot dogs and water for $3. We will be testing/demonstrating the Executive Trainer model. Thank you to the dozen athletes who signed up to swim and all the parents that stepped up to run the barbecue. If you want to come by to watch some swimmers in action or possibly try out the Hydropool, we encourage you to do so. Grab a hot dog and water too. St.Lawrence Pools have offered their generously sized washrooms for the athletes to change into/out of their swim suits.

Outdoor Swimming

The Centennial Outdoor pool is open. We are looking at possibly moving an evening practice there for the Senior and/or Age Group swimmers next week. We will see what the weather brings next week and try to give a couple days notice if a workout will be moved. Also, the Summer Training schedule is out and the Seniors will be training from 6-7:30am every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Centennial Outdoor Pool for the first three weeks of July, plus practicing at the QSWC weekday afternoons from 4:30-6:30pm. There will be an open water practice at Roblin Lake on Tuesday, July 2 from 5-6pm (still a workout at the QSWC). Any Age Group swimmers attending the Burlington meet may join the Seniors’ practices from July 2 to 5. Swimming outdoors is different than indoors and practices at the outdoor pool can benefit the athletes prior to the Burlington Outdoor Meet and Far Western Championships. Please view the July calendar for the complete summer training schedule HERE

Senior Update:

Training throughout May was great with lots of work of technique, efficiency and mid-distance pacing. The Seniors had many great results at Regionals, including having close to 50 finalists and collecting a dozen medals. It was a proud moment to see all the athletes interacting so well with each other to create such a positive atmosphere.

As we approach the end of the regular season, the emphasis is on getting a decent amount of aerobic work in at every practice, followed by having some fun at the end with relays and challenges. The intent is to prepare the Seniors as much as possible to throw down some incredible racing between Provincials and Ontario Youth Juniors.

Summer training will begin Tuesday, July 2nd. We will be at the Centennial Outdoor Pool Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6-7:30am and every weeknight at the QSWC from 4:30-6:30pm. The full schedule can be found HERE

Novice Update:

The 2019 season is almost over and Novice is finishing with the same intensity as they had in the beginning of the season. Over the course of this year we had some fantastic swimmers graduate to Age Group Development where they continued to shine and succeed. Congratulations to all your success, Mya, Lizzie, Laney, Ethan, Francis, Logan and Maddy!! With that being said, Novice was fortunate enough to add some amazing talent to their program including Rayan, Adam, Tamas, Logan, Finn, Leah, Maisie, Adrian and Ashlynn who all took to our program immediately and have become a strong foundation for our Novice group moving forward. Also, congratulations are in order for Rayan and Adam who acquired a combined 3 Regional times already this season! 2019 was a blast and we are all looking forward to 2020. Lastly, I would like to thank Maya, Calaya, Tyler, Catie, Neva and Nate who are now at the top of our Novice Group. Your technique, discipline and leadership were fantastic this year and you were all a very important part of our group. Thank you to all Novice swimmers past and present on a fantastic year and I wish you all the very best moving forward!

Junior BYST Update:

We had eleven Jr. BYST compete at the OSHAC Spring Fling in Oshawa who collectively took off over 80 seconds of time! Jr. BYST have been working hard at setting good habits, including participating in activation, performing streamline off every wall and practicing proper turns. Good habits make great races, and it is paying off! Special mention to Jackson Boyles, Ella Corbin-Morgan, Emily Dorey, Norah Jackson, Caden Mecky, Sebastien Reed, Madeline Rose, Rachel Swartz and Jill van de Hoef for achieving 100% attendance in May!

Reminder that our year end banquet is Friday June 21st at 5:30pm in the Multi-purpose Room at the QSWC. All Jr. BYST are also encouraged to attend our BYST season finale on June 22. Please ensure to commit online by June 14th. Our last practice of the season will be Thursday June 27th.

Any program related questions can be directed to coach Kristin.

Junior Masters Update:

Jr. Masters is wrapping up a successful 2018/2019 swim year! We’ve had some amazing additions to our program and it is a pleasure to be around so many smiling happy faces throughout the year. We kept to our goal of swimming on average over 2000 meters per practice while having a lot of fun! Swimming is one of the best sports in the world where you can be absolutely red in the face exhausted after a tough swim set, but when you come out of the water you can’t help but smile and feel happy for putting in a good workout. Jr. Masters had a lot of that and it was a fun ride. Hope all Jr Master swimmers had fun and see you guys next year!

_______________________________________________________________________________

Masters Update:

Masters are swimming into the end of the season at a rapid pace, increasing their meterage by on average of 200-300 metres surpassing the 2000 metre mark per practice.  We have had some amazing competitors in Kim and Maggie, who took home multiple medals over the course of the season at their respective meets that they attended. We had some personal best times, some new drills learned and some new swim techniques created.  Our Masters program has been a fun success and we look forward to expanding our program for the next season!
