Cascade make their ISL Toronto Titans debut

Cascade Office

Budapest, Hungary (24 October 2020) - The International Swimming League had their first session of their third match today in the “Buda Bubble” and it was a day of historic firsts both for the Cascade Swim Club and the new Toronto Titans expansion franchise.

The very first race of the day was the women’s 100m butterfly and that race saw the Titans pick up their first franchise win with Louise Hansson (Sweden) taking the race in 56.45 while Red Deer Catalina/Cascade Swim Club alumni, Rebecca Smith (also of the Titans) took 3rd in 57.08. The Titans second win came in the 3rd event, the women’s 200m backstroke,  with Lisa Bratton (USA) taking the win in 2:01.74 while team Captain Kylie Masse (age group club: Windsor Essex Swim Team) took second for some huge Titan points.

Next up was our guy, Cole Pratt, making his and the Cascade Swim Club’s ISL debut swimming the men’s 200m backstroke. Pratt had has hands full with a packed field including 2016 Rio Olympic Gold medalist, Ryan Murphy (LA Current) and 2012 London Olympic Silver medalist, Ryosuke Irie (Tokyo Frog Kings). Cole put up a solid swim in 1:53.96 (his second fastest time ever) for 5th place overall. Murphy won in 1:48.40. Irie took second in 1:49.52.

Toronto took the next two events with wins from Kelsey Wog (University of Manitoba Bisons) and Anton McKee (Iceland) in the 200m breaststroke events. McKee’s win in the breaststroke gave the Titan’s another historic first - his footnote in history here - the first Toronto Titan to win a men’s race in the ISL!

Cole’s next event was the 4x100m Freestyle Relay where he put up a lifetime best split of 48.75 following Finlay Knox (Foothills Stingrays) into the water on the Titan’s B Team. Know was just getting in about 10-12’ minutes after his strong 6th place finish in the 200IM at 1:55.64 (just a half-second off of his CDN record!). Alumnus Rebecca Smith was a part of the Titans “A” team where she helped the team to second with her 52.82 split. Another Cascade alumni, Yuri Kisil, was hot on it helping the Titan men to 3rd in the relay with a 46.52 split. Brent Hayden, the team vice-captain, anchored the team with a 46.85 swim.

Shane Ryan (Ireland) was also Toronto’s next event winner for the Titans tying for the event win in the 50m backstroke in 23.06.

The 4x100 Medley Relay was the last event of the day for everyone and Rebecca Smith swum the fly leg for the Titan’s B team with a solid 57.60. Cole led out the men’s B team in another solid performance at 52.01 - his second fastest 100m backstroke ever - and a race in which he had one of the best second 50’s of the field (26.58). An interesting side note for all of our younger swimmers as they move along in their own swimming careers: Expect the unexpected & never never let your state of mind be controlled by that which you cannot control. Both Cole and coach Dave found left for Budapest on Sunday and arrived on Monday and found themselves for all intents and purposes “locked in the room” for 3 days under quarantine after that. Due to the immigration rules in Hungary, some late arriving COVID test results from Canada and needing then to wait for two test results 48 hours a part while in Hungary - Cole didn’t get to swim until Thursday - it was 4 days out of the water before getting back in for pre-meet training. Certainly not an ideal situation for trying to perform amongst some of the top-300 swimmers in the world in this meet format but what are you gonna do?

The whole meet session takes about two hours and is pretty action packed from beginning to end. The next day of racing will happen tomorrow (25 October - Sunday) and is being broadcast on CBC online at 10:00AM (MTN).

Team Scores after Day 1
