CW Makes a Splash at the 2023 Winter Ontario Festival & Western Regional SC Championships

Unlike in past years when the Regional championships served as an opportunity to qualify for the Festivals, the Festivals was the first winter championship meet on the schedule for our younger (13 & Under) age group swimmers, followed by the Western Regionals a week later. Despite the unfortunate timing this season, CW succeeded in making a splash at both these meets.

More detailed meet reports and photos will be published in our March Newsletter by some of our volunteer meet reporters. Until then, here are some quick highlights of the meets:

Winter Ontario Festival Championships

Feb 18-19, 2023
Markham Pan Am Centre, Unionville

  • Only two CW participants.
  • Both achieved 100% PBs.
  • Hayley M finished in the top 8 in all her events.
  • John P dropped massive time in all his events.

Hayley Muscat

  • 200BK BRONZE 2:28.94 (-2.37) – at OSC / Eastern SC pace
  • 100FL 4th 1:09.92 – was edged out of the podium by only .05 seconds.
  • 100BK 6th 1:10.49 (-1.27) – new OSC qualified event
  • 200IM 8th 2:34.36 (-2.32)

John Park

  • 100BR 9th 1:31.18 (-5.18)
  • 50FR 14th 33.06 (-1.79)
  • 200BR 18th 3:25.39 (-7.15)
  • 100FR – 1:13.45 (-7.41)

Western Ontario Region (WOSA) Short Course Championships

Feb 23-26, 2023
Canada Games Aquatic Centre, London

  • 16 GOLD Medals
  • 19 SILVER Medals
  • 17 BRONZE Medals
  • 149 Top-8 Finishes
  • 240 Personal Bests
  • 5th out of 25 Clubs

  • Claire Qin – 50FR (OYJ)
  • Charlotte Heinrichs – 100FL (OYJ)
  • Ryan Papke – 200FL (FEST)
  • Marcus Friesen – 400FR (FEST)
  • Elijah Gurfinkel, Ewan Kim and Yifan Chen also achieved Festival times but will age up before the Summer Festivals.
