SFU’s Regional Meet Great Start Starting Point for Young Sungod Swimmers

November 22, 2018

For the eighteen Delta Sungod Swim Club swimmers who attended last weekend’s SFU Regional level meet it was a great learning experience.   DSSC athletes got the chance to experience some firsts in the sport.  Some athletes got to swim their first 200m event, some achieved their first club records, and for some it was their first ever swim meet!

Jatinder Grewal broke the club record in the Boys 10 & under 200m butterfly.  It had been held previously by his older brother Harbir.  His time of 3:23.29 was almost 7 seconds faster.

Swimmers Grace Bruneau (9), Manraj Johal (10), Isla Pike (9) and Daniel Wang (11) competed in their first LMR meets.  It was a great event for all the first timers and a great learning experience.

DSSC BC Age Group qualifiers were: Jatinder Grewal who achieved his 200 backstroke standard and Yuvraj Rai (11) who achieved his 100 back, 200 back and 200 breaststroke standards.   Achievement of these standards allows Jatinder to compete at the BC Age Group Championships being held in Vancouver this February.

Top 8 finishers for the club were:
Joaquin Aranda (13) 4th 200 fly
Jannat Bhangu (10) silver 200 backstroke, 5th 200 fly
Grace Bruneau (9) 5th 50 back/100 breast, 6th 50 free, 8th 50 breast
Jada Evans (14) 7th 200 breaststroke
Noelle Evans (9) 4th 50 breast, 8th 100 free
Veerkesh Goolab (13) 4th 200 back
Jatinder Grewal (10) bronze 200 fly/100 fly, 5th 200 back,
Vaani Gewal (12) 4th 200 back
Siddharth Mohan (13) 6th 200 breast
Isla Pike (9) 4th 100 breast/200 free, 5th 50 free, 6th 50 fly
Harleen Rai (10) gold 200 back, bronze 200 breast, 8th 100 back
Yuvraj Rai (11) gold 200 back, silver 200 breast, 7th 100 back/100 free
Pawaneet Sangha (14) 4th 200 breast

DSSC Assistant Coach Erin Taylor was thrilled with her athletes’ results.  Her Junior Age Group squad has been diligently working on starts and turns throughout the past 3 months and she feels the time invested has really paid off.

“It is amazing to see the skills that were worked on in practice being used so diligently in competition situations,” says Taylor, “there has been some great focus on this from the kids.”

The Delta Sungod Swim Club will have a busy December with meets in Richmond and Chilliwack.  Swimmers will be at Richmond’s FastSwim Invitational for some top level competition.

For more information on DSSC programs visit www.teamsungod.ca or call 604-345-5912.  Swimmers wishing to join the club must be age 5 and over and must be able to swim 15m unassisted in deep water.  Registration is ongoing throughout the season and is subject to space availability.
