Competitive Squads

Our competitive program is designed for swimmers from approximately ages 6 through 17. Age is calculated based on May 1,2020.

Swimmers are assigned to a training squad based on their skill level. Under the direction of their coaches, swimmers will focus on developing strong competitive swimming skills and techniques.

This program focuses on:

  • developing and refining proper competitive swimming stroke techniques, starts and turns;
  • establishing and maintaining a high level of fitness;
  • improving strength, balance, coordination and general motor skills;
  • teaching and internalizing goal-oriented achievements through discipline, perseverance and dedication;
  • promoting teamwork and leadership skills.

Swim Meet Expectations:

There is opportunity to attend 12 competitions from the end of May through to the Provincial Championship in August.

  • Swimmers are required to attend a minimum of four meets per season; the HUMA Invitational Meet and Regionals are strongly recommended to be two of the required meets.
  • Swimmers are expected to stay for the entire duration of the meet.
  • Swimmers are expected to participate in relays.


  • Swimmers must be able to swim 25M of Freestyle and 25M of Backstroke continuous.
  • Swimmers must be comfortable in deep water.
  • Interest in competitive swimming is desirable.
  • Grouping of swimmers will be determined after a two-week assessment period at the beginning of the season. Grouping will not​ be​ based on swimmer availability.

Training Schedule and Location:

Throughout the season the club trains in the West Pool, Van Vilet Centre, University of Alberta.





Training times include both activation/dryland and pool time - both of which are expected of swimmers. Times are tentative and subject to change. Morning practice expectations will be assigned by coaches after the season has begun.

*Dependant on swimmer's participation in the Regional Swim Meet and subsequent qualification for the Provincial Championship. Swimmers will be invited to train the week of August 10-14, 2020 if they qualify for Provincial Championship in individual or relay events.

Competitive Squad 1-5 Registration Fees:

  • Competitive 1:           $570
  • Competitive 2-5:        $650

Included in the Registration Fee:

  • University of Alberta ONEcard (change room access card). Returning swimmers should bring their ONEcard from the 2019 season. HUMAdoes not cover the cost of a replacement card.
  • Registration of swimmer ($50 value) with Alberta Summer Swimming Association (ASSA).
  • Ticket to the year-end banquet and team awards night.
  • Access to the online store for 2020 HUMA Competitive Team Gear. Gear available includes HUMA swim suits (Speedo Endurance), HUMA silicone swim caps, HUMA T-shirts, fins, and snorkels.**
  • All summer swim meet entry fees, including Regionals and the Provincial Championships (if applicable).
