Maura Connolly-Wieczorek is a physiotherapist and owner of Bluenose Physiotherapy in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Maura grew up in Halifax, NS where she graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Maura continued her studies in London, ON at the University of Western Ontario where she completed the Master of Physiotherapy program. Following graduation, Maura began her career as a physiotherapist in London at a busy orthopedic clinic where she treated a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. Maura continues to take courses to further develop her manual therapy skills.

Maura has always been a strong advocate for health promotion and has always been involved in athletics in the community. Maura has a special interest in both the prevention and treatment of running related injuries and has taken post-graduate courses specific to running injuries.

Maura and her husband Greg enjoy training for and competing in marathons.

 

Mental Performance Consultancy

Dr. Simon Taylor, Mental Performance Consultant, Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic

Simon Taylor joins the CSCA team in 2021 as a mental performance consultant working primarily with provincial sport performance teams. Simon, originally from Germany, found himself in Kentucky where he attended Union College and completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  Simon went on to complete his Master of Science in Sport Psychology and is now a PhD Candidate examining the coach impact on athlete fear of failure.

Simon has personal experience dealing with the highs and lows of sport having played at the highest level of amateur golf.  Simon is extremely passionate about helping athletes achieve their goals and helping them get to the next level of their game. Simon looks forward to working with coaches who want to create an environment in which athletes can thrive but without having to sacrifice their well-being.

When not working with coaches and athletes, Simon can always be found playing some type of sport, paddle boarding or playing with his dog, Cosmos.

 

Nutrition

Melissa Allen, Nutrition / Dietician

Melissa joined the CSCA team in 2018.  Originally from Alberta, Melissa has called Halifax home since 2010.  Melissa’s area of expertise is Dietetics.  Melissa focuses on  Nutrition for the Women’s Canoe/Kayak, plus some nutrition work with IST. 

Melissa has a professional interest in working with athletes to discover the increased mental, physical and performance potential proper nutrition can provide.  Melissa also believes in working with coaches, parents, and athletes to remove the stigma of “good and “bad” foods.

Melissa is passionate about working in sport because she has seen how it can increase confidence, bridge gaps, create passion, develop teamwork skills and improve our overall health.

When not at work, Melissa can be found either running in the woods, riding her bike or out on her skate skis.
