COACHES REPORT

What We Can Learn from Caeleb Dressel (and from Olivier Leroy)

Getting to the top of the swimming summit is not an accident. "The swimmer on top of the mountain didn't just land there!" There’s a lot of dedication, commitment, and of course, the natural talent required to get there. Even if you don’t have designs on going to the Olympics, there are some things you can learn from the training habits and the mindset that elite swimmers use to prepare for the biggest stage our sport has. Over the next weeks we'll look at several different concepts that Caeleb Dressel has used to become an Olympic, World and NCAA champion.

Number 1: Take it one step at a time.

While having big goals is motivating and can give us a little pep on those early mornings or when we are struggling through a tough session in the water, fixating on the distance to be covered can be overwhelming. Instead of getting discouraged by ALL the work ahead of you--the countless meters, all those test sets, the uncertainty and doubt--shine your flashlight of focus on the next step. “It’s focusing on the little steps along the way,” says Dressel.  “It’s having a great practice tomorrow morning and trying to improve in those two hours, then moving on and having a great day. It’s really like having a flashlight in front of you and making sure you’re taking the right steps toward the light at the end of the tunnel.”

How can YOU adopt this approach in practice? By chasing small, incremental improvements in training. Sure, have BIG goals, but chunk them down into manageable pieces and steps. Get in the mindset of swimming your best one lap at a time!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Much quicker this week!  If you missed last week’s newsletter and want more info on the upcoming time trials, please go back and read it.

Our sanction requests are in for 4 sanctioned time-trials:

LAC – Holiday Time Trials:

Dasher 1 - December 19, Warm-Up 4:00 PM, Racing 4:30 to 5:30 PM – 24 Swimmers – Age Group Silver
Dasher 2 - December 19, Warm-Up 6:30 PM, Racing 7:00 to 8:00 PM – 24 Swimmers – Senior Gold

LAC – Ball Drop Time Trials:

Midnight 1 - December 31, Warm-Up 7:00 AM, Racing 7:30 to 8:30 AM – 24 Swimmers – Age Group Bronze
Midnight 2 - December 31, Warm-Up 9:30 AM, Racing 10:00 to 11:00 AM – 24 Swimmers – Age Group Blue / Senior Bronze 2

I think we are good for senior officials for the Holiday Time Trials.  I still need senior officials for the Ball Drop Time Trials.  By senior officials I mean Starter, Timing System Operator, and maybe Clerk of Course and Chief Timekeeper.  If you are qualified and willing please let me know.

Donna has already, or is about to, send out emails to the families of swimmers for each session looking for Judges of Strokes and Turns, and Timers.  I need more judges (4 to 8) than timers (0 to 3), but everyone is important.  We are trying to minimize officials while creating the best result.

To participate, you must be a registered official and qualified for the job you are volunteering for.  If you either is not true, we will be in touch to try to fix that.

Doesn’t sound Christmassy but here’s hoping we don’t go red!

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]

EQUIPMENT

We encourage all swimmers to have an extra cap and goggles, the coaching staff will not be allowing swimmers to borrow caps and goggles at this time. If you require a new LAC swim cap, a coach will give your swimmer a new cap at work-out and we will add $12.00 to your swimmer account and it will be taken out of your account with your monthly fees. You can find your swim equipment information on our website when you are logged in: https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment.

ALL TIDES

We will be placing another bulk order for spirit wear at the end of January. Our team store will be open from January 18-31 if you wish to place orders. A reminder that any individual swim equipment purchases you make on the AllTides site using our LAC coupon code results in a kickback to the club, received at the end of the year. Last year the club received almost $1000 through this arrangement, most of which was put toward the purchase of dryland training equipment. You are helping the club by making your swim equipment purchases through AllTides. If you have any questions regarding All Tides orders or product concerns, please contact the following email address [email protected]
