We want to let everyone know once again what a terrific job our swimmers are doing with the virtual dryland sessions to which we are sadly restricted at this time. The attendance has been excellent, and the levels of focus and effort on display at every session are exemplary. And everyone's proudly repping the LAC orange & blue!

The coaching staff has observed that the virtual format, while obviously far from ideal and not at all preferable to the in-person interactions we get in normal circumstances, does provide the opportunity, with individual cameras turned on, for us to quite closely monitor form and technical execution, probably even more effectively than we can in-person, and without a doubt this has seen marked improvement from when we first started.Our athletes are really taking ownership of their workouts - this is a huge shift in mindset that all high-performing athletes make at some time in their career, and it's exciting for us to watch our groups undergoing this transformation. In addition to the weekly group Zooms that are occuring, the virtual dryland sessions are as well a great opportunity for the coaches to talk on a range of topics while the swimmers are doing their workout. And we are telling the swimmers during their virtual dryland sessions to not focus much at all on their screen, but rather focus on their workout by listening to the cues they get from their coaches. This way our swimmers will hopefully NOT be glued to their screens for yet another hour of the day! They come together with their teammates, look at the workout, make sure they understand the workout, then crush the workout!

Last Sunday sport psychologist Natascha Wesch delivered her 5th session to our swimmers (AG Silver and above), addressing athlete mental health during this 2nd lockdown. All participating swimmers have received a mental health worksheet shared by Natascha, which we are very strongly encouraging them to print off and work through. Of Natascha's many great messages on Sunday (and referenced in the worksheet) is that we ALL tend to categorize our feelings and emotions as positive or negative. And highly motivated high-performing athletes tend to be HARDER on themselves! When what we really need to do is simply recognize that feelings and emotions exist, and will pass. Imagine your feelings & emotions as logs floating down the river, or clouds drifting across the sky, and know that they will pass! And YES, challenge yourself, but try to do it without being hard on yourself - it's OK to give yourself a pat on the back, even for those workouts (and you'll have them) that aren't the greatest. Why pat yourself on the back? Because you SHOWED UP, you GAVE 100%, and you HONOURED YOUR TEAMMATES WITH YOUR EFFORT!
