2020-21 NEWSLETTER 36

WORKOUT CHANGES

All in-water programming is on hold until further notice. We are still awaiting direction from City of London Aquatics on what the latest orders mean for any potential club re-start, and are trying to plan for multiple scenarios around pool availability. It is our plan, once pools to re-open, to provide programming for all LAC groups through Sun July 25. Thereafter, our senior swimmers will be offered an optional additional 3 weeks of training through Sat Aug 14, at an additional cost. We hope this information  helps at least somewhat with family summer planning. When we have received communication from the City of London on pool re-openings, more information on summer schedules will be provided.

Please check the LAC-tive Home Fitness tab on the website for links to all virtual dryland programming.

COACHES REPORT

CONGRATULATIONS to the 8 LAC swimmers who raced at the Take5 test event at the Pan-Am Pool in Scarborough last week. Club records were set by Maggie in the open 50FR and 100FR, Carter Buck in the 15-17 boys 100BK, and Kathryn Ivanov in the 15-17 and open 100BR. As well, both Shona Branton (3rd open women 100BR) and Brett Liem (6th open men 50FR) joined the ranks of LAC's All-Time Top 10 Performers. Well done swimmers - less than 3 weeks until the Trials!

As the rest of us continue to grind it out, we want to share some words of wisdom from a variety of sources regarding the importance of staying positive during times of lock-down frustration and COVID fatigue.

"This too shall pass," is an old Persian saying that may have originated with the poet Rumi. Great American President Abraham Lincoln was a fan of this line because it is "true and appropriate in all times and situations," Lincoln said. "How much it expresses! How consoling in the depths of affliction!"  Impermanence and struggle are favorite themes of the Buddha, including, "Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind."  This should give us hope, maybe even help us see "dawn comes after the darkness," as author Lisa Wingate put it.That's the perspective articulated at the end of the hope-fueled film "Cast Away." After four years stuck on an island and uncertain of what to do once he returns home, Tom Hanks' character, Chuck Noland, says, "I know what I have to do now, I've got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?" And in the end, the last word goes to musician-sage John Lennon. If you only remember one of these aphorisms, this is the one that most succinctly captures endurance, perspective and hope: "Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end."

Swim Canada is offering teammates and family and friends the opportunity to cheer on their favourite Olympic & Paralympic Trials swimmers virutally with their "CHEER ON" campaign. Find all the details at this link and let's make sure our cheers are heard by LAC's and Canada's swimmers at the upcoming Trials.

EQUIPMENT

Please remember that any individual swim equipment purchases you make on the AllTides website using our LAC coupon code result in a kickback to the club, received at the end of the year. Last year the club received almost $1000 through this arrangement, most of which was put toward the purchase of dryland training equipment. You are helping the club by making your swim equipment purchases through AllTides. All group swim equipment information can be found on our website when you are logged in:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment
