2020-21 NEWSLETTER 37

It is with great sadness that we mourn the death of 4 members of one family, with one family member remaining in hospital, in a senseless, cowardly hate-motivated car attack. We extend our deepest sympathies to family, friends and everyone impacted by this tragic and senseless loss, in particular all members of London's Muslim community, for whom we have the utmost respect and regard, and we as a club share in their grief and anger. Hate has no place in the world, our community, or the London Aquatic Club. We are firmly and thoroughly committed to combatting racism, Islamophobia and discrimination in all its forms, and continue to live by our mission statement of providing opportunities for all to be the best they can be in a positive, caring and safe environment. Parents, we encourage you to talk with your children to help them understand and deal with this tragedy, and we remind you there are links to community resources available on our website in both the "Parent Info" and "Coaches Corner" tabs to help children deal with crisis.

The tentative practice schedule for a "Return to Swimming" 3.0 is complete, and is now posted on the website. While there is still much uncertainty surrounding outdoor pool re-openings, we may be able to start as early as THIS SATURDAY, but this is not yet confirmed, so be ready for Saturday, but also be ready to hear we are not starting on Saturday...sound familiar? Unfortunately, renovations to the Thames Park Pool are on-going, which means we will only be swimming at the 6-lane 25-meter Gibbons Park outdoor pool during June. We are hopeful that Thames will be "on-line" at the start of July, and a new schedule will be in place through to July 25. The Canada Games Aquatic Centre, and all indoor pools, are not scheduled to re-open until Stage 3 of Ontario's latest plan, which will be the end of July. Thereafter, our senior swimmers will be offered an optional additional 3 weeks of training through Sat Aug 14, at an additional cost. Stay tuned for details on possible group Zoom meetings later this week to review all protocols & procedures for swimming at the Gibbons Park Pool.

Virtual dryland programming will continue during June, but there will be changes to the schedule, so please check the LAC-tive Home Fitness tab on the website for links to all virtual dryland programming.

June swimmer statements will be emailed shortly. These will be the final membership payments for the 2020-21 regular season and will cover swimming up to July 25. Senior swimmers will be given an opportunity to extend their season until August 14, further information and fees will be communicated in in the near future. Please email Donna if you have any questions at [email protected]

Lend your support to our 8 LAC swimmers racing at the Olympic&Paralympic Trials June 19-23 through Swim Canada's "CHEER ON" campaign. Teammates and family and friends have the opportunity to create a cheer or send words of encouragement to their favourite Olympic & Paralympic Trials swimmers. Find all the details at the "CHEER ON!" link and let's make sure LAC's and Canada's swimmers hear us supporting them!

It looks like we'll be getting back in the water soon! YYYEEESSS!!! As with our reminders for our previous "Returns to Swimming", please remember to take it easy in these first days and first practices. Focus on safety protocols and procedures, focus on your technique, and focus on the long term. Celebrate the fact that you are back together in-person and in-water with your teammates, and remember that every stroke you take and every meter you swim for the rest of the 2021 season is simply early preparation for a fresh start in September. The coaches are SUPER STOKED to see everyone again! The practice schedule for June is posted on the website.
