COACHES REPORT

Last week we shared a list of 10 things we should all try to avoid if we want to succeed - one of the listed items was "self doubt". We received a GREAT follow-up email from a member of the LAC family reminding us that self doubt is NOT something to be avoided but rather something to be accepted as normal and natural and managed to the best of our abilities. The email we received referenced famous self-help guru, author and social media sensation Brenee Brown, who talks about vulnerability and observes the following: "Vulnerability is not about winning or losing. It's about having the courage to show up when you are not in control of the outcome. When you're down on the ground, covered in blood, sweat and tears, what do you see? You see other brave people. Vulnerability is NOT weakness. It is COURAGE."

(As an aside, it's GREAT to know that people actually read the newsletter and Coaches Report!)

We ALL have self doubts...Maggie has them, Penny Oleksiak has them, Kylie Masse has them, Michael Phelps had ALOT of them, Caeleb Dressel, your coaches, your parents...EVERYONE! Just the very next day after last week's newsletter went out, there was an article in the London Free Press about Maggie's NCAA success and right beside it was another headline about Canadian tennis superstar Bianca Andreescu (2019 U.S. Open champ) that read "Bianca battles self doubts". So, self doubts are completely 100% absolutely normal, and NOT a sign of weakness. And precisely why we should all work on strategies to help accept, control, manage and overcome them. We're lucky to have Natascha Wesch working with our team on mental skills, and in the Coaches Corner section of the website there are 7 slide presentations that all reference ways we can work on managing our self doubt. CHECK IT OUT! And remember this: as much as you work on your strength and stamina and speed in the pool, as much as you work on good habits away from the pool - sleep, nutrition, hydration, stretching - it's the work you put into accepting your self doubts that may help you realize some of your greatest successes, not just in swimming but in LIFE! You're already ahead by being a swimmer and part of LAC  - you are surrounded by positive teammates, and (almost) every day you get to challenge yourself physically and mentally to accomplish great things in the pool that maybe you doubted you could accomplish, and that should make you feel very proud of yourself.

FUNDRAISING

Value Village FUNDrive

GREAT response to last week's call! We are now in a much better position to make this a BIG success. We're now up to 56 families and 320+ bags! Remember April 1 (this Thursday) is the last day to sign up to participate. Value Village takes shoes along with clothing! And some shoes weigh a lot! Remember housewares that are no larger than 18 inches in length should go in boxes. Clothing earns $0.15/lb and housewares $0.10/lb. Drop off will be in the Banting High School parking lot between 8-9am on Saturday April 17, where it will be loaded into a rented truck and delivered to Valu Village at 10am. FUNDrive is an eco-friendly "Spring Cleaning” opportunity - ask your neighbours, family, gym buddies, work mates, etc., to donate. It makes a difference not just for the community but for LAC. The Whitby Swim Club in Toronto raised $2400 last month, delivering 750 bags of clothing and 300 boxes of housewares - let's see if we can top that!

North Country Meats

Our second meat fundraiser will happen this spring, with product delivery planned for Saturday May 15. The same protocols and procedures will be in place as for our first, very successful, campaign. We sold 568 boxes of meet back in November, netting the club $3400 and also helping offset membership fees - our rallying cry for the spring campaign is "Fill The Truck!" This means 1000 boxes of meat sold.

Thanks for your support of these great opportunities to help keep LAC financially viable in these uncertain times.

IT’S OFFICIAL!

And now for something completely different . . . Second verse same as the first. I’m livin a red zone I am.  Livin in a red zone I am I am . . . I keep hopin to run a meet some day, but Swim Ontario keeps sayin no way eh! . . .

On the positive side, hopefully this will slow down the third wave long enough to get some critical mass of vaccinations required to prevent a fourth wave.  In the meantime, we cannot host Time Trials while we are red so . . .

9 Race Simulations it will be: Still fun for the swimmers! It’s just that the times achieved are not official.  As noted last week, as far as Swim Ontario is concerned Race Simulations are practices.  We can do whatever is allowed in a practice. Having ANYONE on deck at a practice, besides coaches and swimmers, is NOT allowed.  That includes officials.  Andrew will be the Starter and we will run the timing system so that there will be a scoreboard for the swimmers and so we can collect the unofficial times achieved.

Senior Officials: None allowed. But thank you to everyone who offered and was ready to go!

Minor Officials:  None allowed. But thank you for the excellent response to the call for help and also for updating your official accounts!

Spectators: None allowed inside the building, but it sure would be fun if we could!

Race Simulations:

April 2, 10:30 AM Warm-Up – Age Group Bronze
April 2, 12:30 PM Warm-Up – Age Group Orange
April 2, 2:30 PM Warm-Up – Development

We are still hoping that we can host at least one real invitational later this season.

ALL TIDES (TEAM SPIRITWEAR & SUIT ORDER!)

GREAT NEWS for all of you whose team suits have seen better days or are in need of some LAC Spirit Wear. The team store on the AllTides website will be open from April 7-18 for you to place orders. Bulk delivery is anticipated for the week of May 10. This will be the last opportunity for us to make a bathing suit and Spirit Wear team order this year.  If you have any questions regarding All Tides orders or product concerns, please contact the following email address [email protected]

EQUIPMENT

Please remember that any individual swim equipment purchases you make on the AllTides website using our LAC coupon code result in a kickback to the club, received at the end of the year. Last year the club received almost $1000 through this arrangement, most of which was put toward the purchase of dryland training equipment. You are helping the club by making your swim equipment purchases through AllTides. All group swim equipment information can be found on our website when you are logged in:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment.
