2020-21 NEWSLETTER 6

This week's tip from Oliver Leroy on how to make your current reduced pool schedule count even more:

HAVE TRAINING GOALS FOR PRACTICE.  You might not be the one writing the sets and the practice, but there are things you should want to achieve for yourself. Tighter streamlines? More explosive breakouts? A more aggressive approach into the walls? Adding an extra underwater dolphin kick? Always doing an Olympic finish (hmmm, what's an Olympic finish?!) These are training goals that you can set for yourself. These micro-goals keep you engaged and focused, and also serve as the foundation for long-term confidence and mastery. Take a minute at the beginning of the week or before practice and decide on (write out?) something you want to totally dominate that week or day in the water and then get after it! Having less pool time is a chance for you to learn to be more focused with the time you do have.

While circumstances have prevented us from coming together for a live, in-person banquet this fall, we are excited to acknowledge everyone's accomplishments from the abbreviated 2019-20 swim season, and handing out all of our traditional awards. Please set aside 90 minutes from 7:00-8:30pm on Sunday Nov 1 to join the rest of the LAC family on Zoom as we celebrate all of our achievements from last year. Zoom details will be emailed to everyone soon.

Parents, many thanks for continuing to follow our drop-off & pick-up only request when bringing your swimmer(s) to the pool. As the days get shorter (and darker, and colder) please remember to exercise extreme caution when driving in the CGAC parking lot. We request that you carry on past the CGAC front entrance and let your swimmer exit your vehicle from a parking space, that will relieve a lot of congestion and reduce the frequency of swimmers having to walk between idling vehicles at the front entrance. And, when picking up your swimmer(s) from the back exit, please remember to drive slowly and cautiously out to Wonderland Road. Visibility and road conditions are going to deteriorate as we move into winter's grip. Thank you for your continued diligence in ensuring the safety of our swimmers.

The club undertakes from time to time various fundraising events, to help reduce costs while enhancing LAC programming. An exciting fundraising opportunity will be announced here in the next few weeks, which the club feels has the potential to very lucrative, even in these uncertain times. Stay tuned for more information.

Hello again LAC officials!

Sorry I missed last week.  That work thing got in the way.  I don’t have a lot to report since we are still not allowed to host meets and, in fact, Swim Ontario recently extended their moratorium on issuing meet sanctions well into November.  We are still waiting on guidance on what is allowed in the way of running official’s training clinics.

On a related note, on Thursday, October 15, Swim Ontario issued a statement forbidding the attendance of anyone other than coaches and swimmers at practices.  Their policies make no allowances for regional differences like the Ontario Government does and the Swim Ontario office is in a hot zone.  That would be why we did not have touch pads and the scoreboard in use at Sunday’s Practice.

In order to run meets, we must have someone to fill a new role called the Safety Coordinator.  I want to thank Tamara Thompson and Jan Burton for volunteering to fill this role. Thank you very much Tamara and Jan!

I also want to thank Brad Boulianne, Ian Skilling, and Jay Myatt for helping with our first attempt at a meet simulation.  That went great!

Official’s Registration: Finally, at some point we will be given the go ahead to run a meet of some sort.  To do this we will require officials.  This year Swim Ontario is being much more particular about registration of officials.  If you were an official last year then you MUST be fully registered in order to volunteer at a meet.  Please see the newsletter from two weeks ago and follow the instructions on completing your registration.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]

We encourage all swimmers to have an extra cap and goggles, the coaching staff will not be allowing swimmers to borrow caps and goggles at this time. If you require a new LAC swim cap, a coach will give your swimmer a new cap at work-out and we will add $12.00 to your swimmer account and it will be taken out of your account with your monthly fees. You can find your swim equipment information on our website when you are logged in: https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment.

All-Tides and Speedo have partnered with Swim Canada to offer a small club fundraiser. For a period of two months starting Sept. 1, swimmers, parents, coaches and all swim fans will be able to raise funds for the club of their choice. A dedicated page can be found on the All Tides online store, where one can choose from a selection of Speedo products, and enter their club code when completing the purchase. Speedo will give the club 20 per cent of the total purchase amount. The club code to raise money for LAC is LAC. Unfortunately, we will not be able to customize the items ordered from this speedo fundraiser.

The speedo fundraiser is found here: https://www.alltides.com/en/speedoclub?p=1
