COACHES REPORT

There's a great book by Angela Duckworth called "GRIT - The Power of Passion and Perseverance". One of the most important concepts in this book is that "EFFORT COUNTS TWICE."  Back in the late spring of this year, when we were locked down and Coach Gabbi was taking us through some cycling cardio, she referenced this book and idea! Boiled down, what this concept underlines is the reality that, when it comes to the psychology of achievement, hard work is more important than natural talent.  Here's the formula: FOCUS x EFFORT = SKILL, SKILL x EFFORT = ACHIEVEMENT.  So, show up to practice and focus to the best of your ability, with purpose and persistence, on mastering a particular swimming skill (great streamline? 6 fast powerful underwater fly kicks? flags in-face in on every single freestyle finish? 3 hand-hits before your first breath coming out of your freestyle turn?) And then, once you've mastered that skill, practice it over and over and over again, until it becomes automatic. Then move on to the next skill. Apply this formula to your swimming, and the product will be SUCCESS!

A couple of COVID reminders to all swimmers:

1)when you are in the change rooms either before or after swim practice you must be wearing a facemask at all times. On two separate occasions in the past week it has come to our attention that some of our swimmers are not wearing facemasks in the change room. This does not look good on our organization when members of the public see us not following the rules. Please continue to wear your face masks at all times except when swimming.

2)when participating in our virtual dryland programming, it is still a requirement from Swim Ontario that participants have their cameras turned ON so the activity leaders (Coach Cassie and group coaches) can observe your form and technique to make sure you are doing things correctly, and not endangering your health or safety.

NORTH COUNTRY MEATS FUNDRAISER

Thank you to our fundraising coordinator Nicole Chambers and to everyone who participated.

JANSEN CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE

The Jansen Christmas Toy Drive (@jansenchristmastoydrive) is focused on #kidshelpingkids where kids are asked to sort through their toys, books and games to donate to other kids of like age and gender. The Jansen Family matches your donated items to kids in our community. This year, Blessing Bags will also be shared – so feel free to donate any NEW personal hygiene items, masks, creams, shampoos and anything else you know kids in our community might be able to use to stay healthy and safe. We sure hope you will join us in our collective effort to help children and families in our community enjoy a memorable Christmas amidst these challenging times. Read the Toy Drive flyer HERE.

Toy drop-off times will be November 20th @ 915am in the Banting High School parking lot during the North Country meat pick-up and December 4th in the LAC parking lot during morning practice  Additional times can be arranged as well

***please make sure donated items are clean, in full working order and any batteries replaced. Contact [email protected] if there are any questions.

SWIMMER ACCOUNTS

When a meet is posted for sign up on the website the entry fee will be included in the post. After the entry deadline has passed all swimmers signed up for a meet will be responsible for their entry fees. The entry charges will be on your next monthly statement after the meet. If you have any questions about your statement please email Donna at [email protected]

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Thank you to the 15 people who attended the Judge of Strokes and Turns clinic on Friday evening.  I hope that you make good use of the information received and we see you putting that information to use soon.

Upcoming Clinics:

I am getting a little reluctant to schedule clinics.  In the past I would offer 3 Introduction (Timekeeper and Safety Marshal) clinics in the first few weeks of the season and I would train 60+ swimmers for those 2 jobs.

I have the first occurrence of this clinic planned for this Friday evening and so far I have 4 people signed up in a room that could take 40 students.  The first occurrence of the Strokes and Turns Clinic had one person sign up.  A really good student, but still!  This is a club with over 300 swimmers.  That includes a lot of new families all of whom agreed to at least take the Intro clinic if they had not already done so.  The Intro and the Strokes and Turns clinics are best done in person. Zoom clinics will likely be reserved for the Senior official clinics, when I have time to hold them.

Introduction, Timekeeper, and Safety Marshal: Friday November 19 – 7:00 to 9:00 PM – GCAC – Entry level meeting room – limit currently at 40.

How To - Online Sign-Ups for Clinics and for Working at Meets:

You can sign up for clinics and jobs as Judges of Strokes and Turns and as Timers on the LAC website.  Sign in to the site and on the LAC team home page scroll down until you come to upcoming events.  Click on, Job Signup.  A screen will appear with a row for every position.  There may be groupings by session and job type.  Please only sign up for jobs that you are qualified for.  There is a clinic for every job but we allowed to use anyone for timers.  ALL other jobs require the clinic first.  Lines with no name and a check box can be used by you.  Check a box and click on Signup.  A pop-up window will appear with a place for Contact Info.  Please ALWAYS provide the first and last name of the person who will be attending in this position.  We need to confirm that the official has an account with consents completed and that the official is qualified to do what they are signing up for.  After the name is entered, click on Sign Up.  Repeat using one line per volunteer. There might be two people who are both qualified for the job and only one will be coming but you are not sure which.  In that situation include BOTH names with an OR in between.

Meet Volunteers:

Timing is the ONLY position where you are not REQUIRED to have the clinic to do the job.  You cannot sign up for any other official position if you will not have the clinic before the meet.

How do I sign up for Senior Official positions?: Senior Official positions are every position other than Timekeeper and Judge of Strokes and Turns.  If you want one of those then email the competition coordinator (usually me) with the jobs you are interested in, and the sessions that you are available.  If you have any special requests, please include those too, for example bulkhead or NOT bulkhead.

Registration is NOT an Option!!!!!!:  To attend a live clinic or to volunteer at a meet, everyone must have their own official account AND the online consent forms MUST be completed and signed before the clinic or the meet.  If you sign up to attend and you do not have an account or the account registration is not complete for this year, then we will be contacting you to complete your registration.  Please do not make us chase you!  That is not fun for anyone.  When we set up a new account, we will trigger an email from [email protected] with your account information.   If you have a spam filter, please allow email from that account AND from my account [email protected]

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

With us getting ever closer to a return to sanctioned swim meets, with multiple clubs and more swimmers, the need for more volunteer officials will be even greater. The club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the "earning" of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and above are required to earn 22 session credits each year.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded)!

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session.

EQUIPMENT

Please remember that all individual swim practice equipment purchases you make on the AllTides website using our LAC coupon code result in a kickback to the club, received at the end of the year. Last year the club received almost $1000 through this arrangement, most of which was put toward the purchase of dryland training equipment. You are helping the club by making your swim equipment purchases through AllTides. All group swim equipment information can be found on our website when you are logged in:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment
