COACHES REPORT

Welcome to another swim season everyone, and a very special welcome to those of you who are first-time members of our club! We simply want to remind everyone this week to please continue to follow all COVID-19 protocols and procedures as we embark on the new year...there will be hiccups in these first few weeks and we all need to remain patient and positive as we come back into our training facilities. We are not the only patrons of the facilities we use, and thus must be respectful of everyone around us, whether a facility employee or a member of the general public.

Usually we use this space to acknowledge the great performances of our swimmers and offer up little tidbits of technical and tactical and motivational wisdom to help you all progress on the long journey that is your swimming career - stay tuned for that. Take it slow and easy in these first few days and practices - there will be plenty of tiem to swim fast later!

We'd like to welcome our 9 new coaches to the LAC team (Max, Sasha, Julianna, Emiko, Brigitte, Jenna, Graceyn, Larkyn and Slava) and welcome back Coach Meggin!

ALL TIDES

We are happy to report that we are in partnership with All Tides again in 2021-22. The team store is NOW OPEN for bathing suit and team spiritwear purchases, and will remain open through Sun Sept 26. All swimmers in our Age Group and Senior programs must wear the team training suit. There is a sizing kit available at CGAC should you wish to have your swimmer try some suit options and sizes.  To create your account and place orders use our club code: LAC   If you have any questions regarding All Tides orders or product concerns, please contact the following email address [email protected]

EQUIPMENT

Please remember that any individual swim equipment purchases you make on the AllTides website using our LAC coupon code result in a kickback to the club, received at the end of the year. Last year the club received almost $1000 through this arrangement, most of which was put toward the purchase of dryland training equipment. You are helping the club by making your swim equipment purchases through AllTides. All group swim equipment information can be found on our website when you are logged in:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/canlac/page/swimmer-equipment

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Hi LAC officials and welcome to a new swimming season.  Unfortunately my first message of the year is a sad one . . .long-time member of the LAC family Alex Vanderkam passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021.  Most LAC volunteers, from seasons prior to COVID, will remember Alex helping at most of our meets.  If you had high school swimmers, you probably saw Alex at those meets as well.  Alex will certainly be missed.  Several of Alex’s Senior Official friends wrote the following announcement which is posted on Swim Ontario’s website:

Alex was a Level 5 Master official with Western Region, having volunteered for 28+ years in the swimming community. He started by joining the Piranha’s Of Woodstock, moved to London continuing with the London Aquatic Club, and volunteered for many years with High School swimming as well.  He was instrumental in fundraising for London’s very first set of touch pads in the late 90’s, and loved to tell legendary tales of guarding that equipment, overnight at the Thames Pool with his fellow officials, for many Dr. Paul Hauch swim meets.

Alex will be warmly remembered for, being a lot of fun on the deck, often making light of something in a long and challenging session to generate a much-needed laugh, and always armed with a story to tell.  He gave his time and efforts graciously and was a mentor to a very long list of future officials, but was also ready to receive advice as willingly as he was to give it. He was as receptive to a new swim parent as he was to one he had known for 20 years, eager to strike up a conversation with anyone. He had an infectious laugh, made sure that his fellow Senior Officials did not take themselves too seriously on the deck, and was the life of the party at our Senior Officials dinners.

A private family service will be held in Port Hope on Friday September 17th, 2021.

An obituary can be found HERE, and includes a link for a live stream of the funeral service.

I will have information about the upcoming season next week.
