WHO IS MARILYN BELL?
Marilyn Bell DiLascio was born on October 19, 1937 as Marilyn Bell. A long-time member of Lakeshore Swim Club, Bell rose to fame when at the age of 16, she completed the 32-mile (51.5 km) swim across Lake Ontario. The swim was originally planned as a challenge for the famous American swimmer and celebrity, Florence Chadwick, with two other swimmers providing a competitive backdrop. Marilyn Bell, however, considered it a race. Competing against Chadwick and Winnie Roach-Leuszler, another accomplished open water swimmer, she dove in on September 8th, 1954 in Youngstown, New York. Gus Ryder, the founder and head coach of Lakeshore Swim Club, was in a boat by her side as she battled the treacherous waters of Lake Ontario. After 20 hours and 59 minutes of struggle, Marilyn Bell, the only remaining swimmer, touched the finish line before a crowd of onlookers at Toronto's Sunnyside Beach on September 9th, becoming the first person to complete the swim across Lake Ontario, and a local hero. After her Lake Ontario swim, Marilyn Bell became the youngest person to swim across the English Channel, and completed the swim across the Strait of Juan de Fuca as well.
