getting started

WELCOME to Markham Aquatic Club (MAC)! If you are new to MAC and the sport of competitive swimming, we know that things may seem a little overwhelming. Your registration package has most of the information you need for this season. Please feel free to ask your child's coach or your group parent representative or email our club administrator at [email protected]. We are here to help!

Your child's group practice schedule is set at the beginning of the season. This schedule is generally followed, however, due to changing circumstances such as holidays, swim meets, pool closures, etc. planned pool times can periodically change. Your child's coach will keep you informed by email or text message. Please check the Group Schedule page weekly to ensure that you are aware of any schedule changes.

Getting the proper equipment for your swimmer is essential. MAC offers members a discount on Arena suits and equipment through our retail partner. Please see the Equipment page for a list of all the items your child will need and where to purchase. Make sure ALL of your swimmer's equipment and apparel is well labelled. Please ask your group coach if you have any questions concerning the equipment.

Volunteering is part of your involvement with MAC. In fact,  every MAC family is expected to have at least ONE family member volunteering. MAC has a volunteer points system in place. Most members earn their volunteer points by officiating at swim meets. Don't worry if you have no officiating experience. MAC provides free officials training. Volunteering is a fulfilling way to be involved in your child's sport. In addition to officiating, you can earn volunteer points by helping on a committee, serving as a parent rep, becoming a Board member, chaperoning for team travel events and so much more. Please carefully review the Volunteering page so that you fully understand your volunteering requirements.

MAC swimmers at all levels are expected to participate in swim meets. Coaches (not parents) register swimmers for meets. Your group coach will select the right swim meets and events for your swimmer. Depending on the swimmer level, swim meets usually take place several weekends per month. Swim meets allow swimmers to set officially recorded times, measure their personal progress and prepare them to compete at higher-level meets. Swim meets are fun! Swimmers interact with teammates and meet swimmers from other clubs. They also gain competition experience, receive valuable feedback from coaches and enjoy the satisfaction of accomplishing goals.

Parents benefit from swim meets too! It's not just about cheering from the stands. On a competition weekend, you'll find dozens of MAC parents volunteering on deck and behind the scenes. Volunteering at a MAC hosted swim meet sets a good example for your child, lets you interact with other parents, learn more about the sport and helps keep your costs down. Email [email protected] to learn how to volunteer at our swim meets.

Your coach is the main source of information about your child's swimming group, so it is important to check your email regularly. The MAC administrator will also email you about club updates and MAC Meet Management will email you about officials training and volunteering.
