Tokyo 2020 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials Set to Begin!

Chris Ellul

Hello Scarborough Swim Club!

The Tokyo 2020 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials begin tomorrow, running Saturday, June 19 through Wednesday, June 23. The event is taking place at our home facility, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough, with all preliminary and final sessions being live streamed at cbcsports.ca. You can also use the CBC Sports app or CBC's Gem live streaming platform.

We are very excited to watch three Scarborough Swim Club representatives in Rebecca Smith, Taylor Ruck, and Finlay Knox.  While Taylor has already qualified for Tokyo 2020 in the Women's 100m Freestyle through a special pre-selection process (this will be Taylor's 2nd Olympic Games), she will be looking for additional events to race this summer.  These Trials will be Rebecca's and Finlay's first opportunity to qualify for the Games.

Saturday, June 19
Tune in at 9:30am this morning to see Rebecca and Finlay compete in the 100m Butterfly.  Taylor will swim the 100m Backstroke closer to 12:30pm (use 12:15pm) today.
We'll also post a full timeline for SCAR swimmers later today. You can also use your MeetMobile app to follow along with results if you're unable to watch live.

I would also like to give a special mention to Sam Bereza, Mikaela Blake, and Asahi Okugawa. These three hometown Scarborough Swim Club members also qualified to race at this (and last) year's Trials. Unfortunately, the many restrictions greatly reduced the field of eligible participants for the June Trials. Nevertheless, it is extremely important we again recognize our homegrown swimmers and their achievements.

Congratulation's to Sam (400 Individual Medley, 1500m Freestyle), Mikaela (100m Butterfly), and Asahi (100m Breaststroke)!

Scarborough Swim Club also knows of our Eastern Canadian Championships, and Canadian Junior and Senior Championships qualifiers in our High Performance & Gold groups that are on the hunt to add the Canadian Swimming Trials to their resume.  We know that you, as well as all SCAR swimmers have some big goals... We will be back to the pool soon.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Chris Ellul
