LMR Champs Recap, by Morgan Mark

On Feb 9-10, the Rapids hosted the 2019 LMR Championships at Watermania. 58 Rapids athletes from AGD1, AGD2, Senior Provincial, RD Blue, RD Black, PAG, NAG, Youth Competitive A and Youth Competitive B participated in the meet.

LMR Championships consisted of two morning sessions (11&U Girls and 12&U Boys) and two afternoon sessions (12&O Girls and 13&O Boys) over Saturday and Sunday. Races ranged from stroke 50’s to the 400 freestyle and 400 IM.

Angie Pham was the first of the Rapids to finish in the top three, finishing second in the 50 fly. Pham also did well in the 50 breast, finishing first. She was followed by many of her teammates, including Joaquin Villasenor, who took second in the 100 free, third in the 200 free, and won the 100 back after an 11-second improvement. Alex Bulgakov topped the podium multiple times, winning both the 100 and 200 free.

The boys 200m IM was the coach’s highlight of the meet. The teammates came together ahead of time and placed bets on heat winners and fastest swim. The excitement resulted in seven new Age Group Championship qualifiers. The best time swimmers and new qualifiers were Joaquin Villasenor, Alexander Bulgakov, Tristan Sasan, Tai Stroud, Clement Ho, Winston Stone, and Heath Lim-Sanderson.

Sasan had the largest time drop to qualify, just over 14 seconds. Stroud not only qualified but dropped nearly 13 seconds and finished first in his age group. Lim-Sanderson finished third. Ho had the fastest time of the morning, finishing in 3:01.61 and winning the 12-year-old event. Ho also placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 breast.

Sasan took top spots later in the meet as well, winning the 200 fly and taking second in the 50 free.

Other morning session podium finishes included Russel Wang, who won the 100 breast, Daymon Wijayakoon, who came in second in the 200 breast, Ysabelle Lee, finishing in 2nd in the 100 fly, Lim-Sanderson, who was third in the 100 fly, and Bulgakov, finishing third in the 100 back.

For the 12&O girls and 13&O boys, Ken Stroud started off the top finishes after improving by over six seconds to win the 200 back. He also took first in the 50 free. Ty Shellenberg finished third in the 200 IM, and Nick Kennedy won the 100 freestyle after dipping under the one-minute mark for the first time. Nick also won the 200 freestyle, where his teammate Liam Pearce finished in third. Kayla Zhang finished third in the 200 fly.

Congratulations to Powell Li, Yona Berger, Heath Lim-Sanderson, Joaquin Villasenor, Daymon Wijayakoon, Jeremy Chen, Jeffrey Guan and Joshua Laing, for swimming 100% best times in all their events this weekend! Good work to MVPs Clement Ho and Nick Kennedy for placing top 5 in all their events.

Lastly, a big thank you to all parents and NAG and National group swimmers who came out to volunteer!
