On June 21st, the Richmond Rapids travelled to Chilliwack to compete at the Summer Age Group Championships in Chilliwack, hosted by the Spartan Swim Club and SwimBC.  The Richmond team consisted of 24 swimmers from the AGD2, RD Black, and PAG groups.

The racing started on Friday with the boys 100 Butterfly. Three boys had top-8 finishes in their respective age group. Matthew Guan and River He seventh, and Joshua Wall came in fourth. We also had a new club record in the 100 Butterfly set by Yiguo Song. Song also went on to break the 200 Butterfly record later on in the weekend.

A bit later in the morning session came the 400 IM. The Rapids have always found success in this event, this time from the PAG group. Joshua Wall got his first silver medal of the weekend. Teammates David Maibaum and River He placed fifth and fourth, respectively.

The Friday afternoon session began with a team event, the 200 Medley Relay. The Boys 11 & Under team of Tai Stroud, Joshua Wall, Yiguo Song, and Jerry Tao placed third. In the 100 Backstroke, Coco Xie and Elim Yang both finished 8th. Later on, Cindy Du placed fourth in the 100 Fly and broke the club record.

The second day of the meet started with 100 Freestyle and an 8th place finish in the event by Jerry Tao. Tao then raced the 400 Freestyle later in the morning session, finishing 7th. Joshua Wall concluded the morning session for the Rapids, finishing third in the 400 Freestyle.

In the afternoon session on Saturday, our Boys 11 & Under team once again earned third place, this time in the 200 Freestyle relay, the second team event medal Tao, Stroud, Song, and Wall. After, Wall raced in the finals of the 200 IM and placed fourth. River He placed 6th in the 100 Breaststroke.

We had two individual medals won to conclude the second day. Joshua Wall and Cindy Du earned a silver medal in the 100 Breaststroke. Du wasn’t even seeded in the top eight. An outstanding performance in an earlier heat moved her ninth to second place.

Following the Mixed Medley relay on Sunday, Rapids swimmers continued to put points on the board for the team. Elim Yang and David Maibaum placed sixth and seventh in the 200 Backstroke in their respective age groups. On the girl’s side, Coco Xie and Rebecca Dong placed seventh and eighth. Dong moved up 15 rankings to clench her a spot in the top eight. The 200 Butterfly was an even better event for the Rapids. River He and David Maibaum both earned the bronze medal in their respective age groups. Joshua Wall dropped the hammer and moved up 6 spots to win the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:37.91. In the final individual event of the weekend, Wall earned his final medal, a silver in the 200 Breaststroke. Jerry Tao and River He both placed sixth.

After three days of racing, the Richmond Rapids finished in ninth place overall with ten medals and three new club records. Our boy’s team finished in third place. It was a great weekend of racing and the coaches were impressed with the performance of the athletes.
