Saskatoon Aqualenes Coaches

Laurie ~ In addition to being the Head Coach of SAQ, Laurie is the High Performance Director for Synchro Sask. She has 34 years of coaching experience and has coached many athletes to medal performances at a provincial and national level and placed numerous Saskatchewan athletes onto National Teams. In November of 2000, the Coaching Association of Canada selected Laurie as the recipient of the 3M Coaching Canada Award in the Development Sport – Female Category. In November 2004, she was inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame as a “Sport Builder”. In 2009 Laurie was awarded Sask Sports Female Coach Dedication Award. In 2010, she received Synchro Canada’s Distinguished Member Award, recognizing a member of Synchro Canada who has made an exceptional contribution to the “art as well as the sport” of synchronized swimming. In Laurie's own words, "I have dedicated my life to sport and coaching and feel blessed to have the opportunity to shape and influence your amazing young athletes this season!"

Alana ~ My name is Alana Hargreaves, and I swam synchro for fourteen years. I enjoy swimming in my spare time, now that I am no longer training full time. My favourite part of synchro is the artistry within the sport, and the creativity used to create it. This year I am helping coach the 13-15 NS on Mondays.

Brenda ~ I will be substitute coaching for the Aqualenes this year. I have recently moved to Saskatoon from Estevan, where I was the head coach for the Estevan Mermaids for 12 years. I wasn’t ever a synchronized swimmer, so I am in awe of what they do every day. I love everything about synchro; mostly the gifts that it gives all of us outside of the pool – positive self-worth, feelings of accomplishment, how to function as part of a team and the thrill of setting goals, working hard day in and day out to see them come to fruition. Outside of synchro, I am the Brand & Marketing Manager for Affinity Credit Union. Marketing, with branding in particular, is my passion. In the few hours that I am not working or at the pool, I love to be with my family (Zach is a teacher in Calgary and Tess a student at U of R) and to go for long walks.

Brittany ~ My name is Brittany Leaper, this year I am coaching the National Stream program as well as mentoring the 10&Under Team. I swam for nine years  before retiring and becoming a coach, this will now be my eleventh year coaching. I have coached almost every age group in the club from aquagiggles to 16-18. I was the coach of the 2015 Canada Winter Games Team and I have also been an apprentice coach for the Canadian 13-15 and Junior National Teams. I am fully certified in coaching level 3 - competition development. Consecutively in 2017 and 2018 I have placed an athlete on a Canadian National Team. I love our sport because of the friendships it has given me, synchro is my family away from home. I also love the creative outlet that the sport allows me to have. I feel blessed to be able to come to the pool each and every day and do something I truly love. I am looking forward to a fun and successful season!

Cloie ~ Hello my name is Cloie Desroches. I was a Synchronized Swimmer with SAQ for 10 years. I started when I was 7 years old and swam until I was 17 years old. During my time as an athlete I strived and accomplished many goals including being a gold medalist in team, duet, solo, and figures on multiple occasions. Some of the highlights were competing in the 2006 Saskatchewan Winter Games, and in 2011 I was fortunate to be selected to be on the Canada games team and competed in the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, NS. After high school I became certified as a lifeguard and I have been employed by the City of Saskatoon for the past 5 years.  Outside of lifeguarding and coaching I enjoy spending time with friends, family and love traveling. This year I am excited to coach the 12 and Under team. I hope to be able to share and teach my team the skills and enjoyment I have learnt over my many years in my Synchro career.

Eliot ~  My name is Eliot Paul and this is my first year coaching with SAQ. I  am coaching the 8-10 rec team on Saturdays. This is my ninth year swimming, my second year with the Aqualenes. I swam both rec and comp in Edmonton before moving to Saskatoon in May of 2017.  I currently attend grade 11 at Centennial Collegiate. I am still swimming with SAQ, doing both team and a duet this year. Synchro has been a huge part of my life and I am excited to pass my knowledge onto the younger swimmers!

Emma ~  Hi I’m Emma! I am currently swimming my 10th year of synchro. Outside the pool I enjoy hanging out and watching movies with my friends. I love synchro because you get so close to everyone in the sport. This is my first year of coaching and I am coaching Giggles, recreation, and limited competitive.

Heather ~  Hello!  My name is Heather Crooks and this is my second year coaching with the Saskatoon Aqualenes.  This year I will be coaching the 8 and under provincial stream team as well as organizing the recreation program. Before coaching, I swam for 9 years, including 3 years in the national stream program in Edmonton, Alberta.  My favourite thing about synchro is seeing the improvement of swimmers throughout the year!  When I am not coaching, I enjoy spending time with my children and  my dogs!

Jenna ~ My name is Jenna Willie and this is my second year coaching with SAQ. I am currently in grade 12 at Centennial Collegiate I swam with SAQ for 10 years and accomplished a lot in that time. This year I am coaching the limited competitive group as well as a rec group. I love teaching the swimmers new skills in synchro and seeing all of them wanting to improve each day and also the family that comes along with the sport who are always there for you. Synchro has been a big part of my life for a long time and will continue to be for many more years.

Kassidy ~ My name is Kassidy Yockey. I swam for about 10 years across many levels and provinces! Ending my career was my last year of junior NS with the BC Aquasonics and being a member of Team BC! Outside of synchro I'm currently working on my bachelor of commerce at the Edwards school of business! I'm in my second year, and gear my elective classes toward learning about health to help me with coaching!I really love that synchro teaches you to be an individual but shows you how to be a collaborative team member. Synchro shows our athletes how to push past physical limitations and become unique individuals who strive to overcome challenges and pursue excellence in all aspects of life. This year I am co-coaching the 12 and under team, the 13-15/16-18 team. I also have 3 solos and am working with the NS as well.

Katie ~ This is Katie’s third year coaching with the Aqualenes. Katie was a swimmer with the Aqualenes for 10 years, with over half of that time spent as a national stream athlete. She competed at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, and has since taken to coaching and swimming for fun as a masters athlete. Katie recently completed her B.Sc. in archaeology at the U of S and is currently working full time at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.  She has also worked as a lifeguard/swim instructor/mentor at the university pools since the fall of 2012, teaching swimming lessons to children and adults. Katie is looking forward to coaching a team this year and all of the excitement that it will bring with it!

Shaelynn ~ Hi my name is Shaelynn Thiessen and I have been with the Saskatoon Aqualenes for 13 years, 7 as a swimmer and 6 as a coach. Over the past 6 years I have coached mainly provincial stream teams and this year I am coaching the 13-15 NS team alongside Brittany Leaper and Laurie Wachs. I am very excited to be coaching a group that is much different than what I have experience with, it pushes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me to be a better coach each time I step onto the pool deck. What I love most about this sport is its unique way of teaching the girls about teamwork as well as growing as an individual. There are so many life lessons to be learnt in this sport, and I would not be who I am today without it. When I am not coaching I am lifeguarding or teaching swimming lessons with the City of Saskatoon. This past spring I convocated from the College of Kinesiology and I am taking this year off to figure out what I am going to do next and enjoy the time off from school. In my spare time I enjoy reading and spending time with my friends and family. Being at the pool is where I feel the most at home, I love this sport and I am excited for what this synchro season brings!

Theodosa ~ Hi! My name is Theodosa den Brok. This will be my second year coaching with the Aqualenes. I have the pleasure of coaching the 10&Under competitive team this year. Before coaching I swam for 8 years, including 3 years in the national stream program. My favourite thing about synchronized swimming is being able to share my passion for the sport with all the young swimmers. When I’m not at the pool I enjoy going to yoga and spending time with my friends.
