Pre-Competitive Swim Program (2020-21)

Update on Fall Programming - August 22, 2020

Our priority is for the health and safety of our swimmers, coaches and our families. As much as we miss the swimmers in our pre-comp program, we have decided to put our fall session on hold at this time.

We are following all Ottawa Health and Swim Ontario guidelines, and as such, the restrictive numbers and implementation of practices in a 'double lane' 2m spaced format, it is not feasible to safely run for our pre-competitive swimmers

We will evaluate how the fall unfolds with the pandemic and decide whether we can start back up in January.

Many have seen the Ontario provincial announcement that swimming pools would be allowed to re-open beginning Friday 12 June.

Despite our wish to see that happen immediately, it will not be so easy nor quick.  For the city pools we rent from, pool re-opening will be controlled by the City of Ottawa, who have already provided guidance asking swim clubs for patience -- a careful process of health inspections is first required, and new physical-distancing protocols need to be validated for each different location.  The JCC pool, will also adhere to a similar process.  Thus the current message we have received is a request for patience, with no definite timeline. We will be continually monitoring the situation on a daily basis and will post updates.

This program is designed for keen aqua kids who intend to progress to our Competitive stream by learning speed swimming skills, strokes, starts and finishes. By skill development in practices and timed events at fun swim meets, these levels promote development through learning and experience in organized competitions. All practices are conducted at either the Jewish Community Centre or Brewer Centennial pools.

The Program

The program is divided into four groups corresponding to the age/capability of the swimmer.

Swimmers must be at least 7 years old (max 8 years old) and have a swimming capability corresponding to a minimum of level 4 and be able to swim to swim 25 meters (one length) of "recognizable" front crawl (arms recovering over the water, side breathing with little to no hesitation), and 25 meters of backstroke. Objective is to progress them to a Guppies level with efficient breathing and an introduction to breast stroke with whip kick.

Swimmers must be at least 7 years old and have a swimming capability corresponding to a minimum Swimmer 5. Must be able to do 50 meters (two lengths) of recognizable front crawl with continuous arms and breathing (arms recovering over the water, side breathing with no hesitation), 25 meters of backstroke, dolphin kick, and breast stroke with whip kick.

Swimmers must have a swimming capability corresponding minimum Swimmer 7 and be between 8-11 years of age. Must be able to do 150 meters (6 lengths) continuous using a mixture of front crawl, backstroke, butterfly (development) and breast stroke (ankles outwards on the extension) AND swim 50 meters freestyle in 75 seconds or faster.

NEW in 2019-2020: Whale swimmers identified by our coaches within our Whales groups, have an oppotunity to join our Sharks groups as a pre-cursor to our competitive program. Swimmers are aged 8-11) and will swim within our sessional dates, however will be registered to be able to compete in competitions withing the National Capital region.
