RE:  Province-wide restrictions for sport

As I’m sure you’re aware, B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer (PHO) has put in place province-wide restrictions similar to those that were in effect in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions. These restrictions were effective midnight last night.  Here is what we currently know and what has been communicated to Swim BC.

By order and direction of the PHO, all individuals, places of work and business in B.C. must significantly reduce social interactions and travel.  The order is in effect from November 19, 2020 at midnight to December 7, 2020 at midnight and includes information about sport activities.

At this time the written order has yet to be posted; however, information is posted on the Province’s website here with the following references to sport:

Competitions (time trials for our purposes) and practices can continue under the following conditions:

  • No spectators are allowed at any sport activities under the order. The only people allowed to attend sport activities are those that provide care to a participant or player. For example, providing first aid.

  • Travel to, from and between regions for athletic activities like games, competitions, training and practice is restricted under this order.

Since the announcement yesterday, we have been seeking an interpretation for the first bullet point above, specifically trying to determine if the officials required for time-trials are considered spectators.

We have not yet received that interpretation; we will send a second bulletin once we have that interpretation.  To that end, we cannot say definitely whether the time trials scheduled for this weekend can proceed or not.

Please note, all members must now wear masks when coaching, or when out of the pool.

Ken Radford
