Twenty-five swimmers from Gold 14, Gold 15 and Varsity kicked off the December peak meet season this year by attending the Youth Cup competition at the Pan Am Pool in Toronto from December 7-9. The team travelled on Wednesday, two days before the meet, to help them acclimatize to the time change and prepare for peak performances. Training sessions were held on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning and by the end of the second session the swimmers were primed and ready to go.

Once the meet got underway the group was quick to start posting big best times. At the end of the week the team had personal bests in 78% of their races, including nine swimmers who posted 100% best times: Ali Al-Shareef, Ryan Duggan, Hayley French, Eliza Housman, Ryenne Katterhagen, Patrick McCloy, Samiha Mohsen, Allen Qu, Kennedy Scott, Kim Song, and Josh Summers. Typically, these groups post approximately 60% best times at peak meets, so this competition was especially exceptional.

Ten Club Records were broken over the course of the weekend. Individually, records went to Teagan McKenzie (100 free, 200 free, 200 back), Eliza Housman (50 free), Kennedy Scott (200 free), Kim Song (100 breast, 100 IM), and Patrick McCloy (400 free). The 13-14 Girls relay (Teagan Mckenzie, Alicia L’Archeveque, Eliza Housman and Calli Giroux) broke two records (200 Medley and 200 Free), with both events falling just short of the provincial record.

The swimmers showed off a lot of muscle as well as the team brought back the “Bronto” cheer for every gold medal. With 27 total gold medals there was a lot of Calgary muscle on display! The team spirit throughout the weekend was evident with UCSC being the loudest and most engaged team in the meet. The swimmers lined the side of the pool during races (sometimes even both sides) to support those in the water. This support snowballed through the finals sessions with the excitement growing and the swimmers getting better and better with each race!

In the end it was one of the most exciting and inspiring meets in recent memory. If this is the sign of things to come, the rest of the December meets should bring fun and fast racing!
