Off to the Races!

Night one of the 2019 Alberta Summer Swimming Championships is in the books. Today’s races included the 1500 Free and 800 Freestyle Relay. The Dinos had a strong showing at the pool ending with 181 points to finish the first day of competition in second place behind EKSC. The meet is still young and I suspect it will be a great competition for the large team title.

The team of Teagan McKenzie, Alicia L’Archeveques, Natalia Rusnakova and Emily Bugbee nabbed the silver medal in the 13-14 girls 800 Free Relay to get the ball rolling for UCSC. The 15 & over girls showing the depth our swim club has in this age group got two teams on the podium. The A team cruised in for the silver medal, while the B team followed just behind for the bronze medal. The 16 and over boys team of Paul Mckenzie, Charles Wang, Nick Kennedy and Richie Stokes had a strong showing placing 3rd to win the bronze medal.

The distance swimmers showed true Dino grit as the metric mile was raced center stage at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre. Liam Dennett and Pat McCloy raced in the top heat for the men. From the start Pat pushed the pace switching positions for the lead with Drew Edwards but it was Liam Dennett that stole the show as he pushed the back half of his race to capture the gold in the 16 and Over boys age group. Aiden Norman swam himself to a best time in the 13 and under boys age group capturing the bronze medal. Martin Dunajsky finished a strong 5th in the 14-15 age group.

The Dinos were well represented by the girls in the 1500! Katie Graboskie (5th) and Kealeigh MacLeod (4th)  had the girls covered in the 12 and under age group, while Kamryn Leslie (4th and club record), Quinlann Bymoen (5th), Eliza Housman (7th), Kamryn Leslie (8th), Calli Giroux (11th) and Maya Bessling (15th) were all over the 13-14 age group.

Swimmers not competing this evening are looking forward to having a shot at their races tomorrow. Warm Up is at 7:30 am with the first race going at 8:30. Get you rest and swim fast! This is coach Jeff closing out the evening from the pool deck of the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre.
